A co-worker is having one and asked that anyone interested should bring 6 dozen cookies.

I've never been to one before, is this amount the norm?

When my friend has one it is 1/2 dozen per person who is coming to the party...

I thought 6 dozen seemed like way too many! Heck, I never make 6 dozen at one time, not even for my family!

I would think that 2 dozen would be more than enough for something like an exchange.

Maybe she is planning on having alot of people attend.
You could make the no bake cookies and that will save you time.

True mommytotwo, but I thought the whole point of a cookie exchange was so that you could sample homemade (as in from scratch) cookies that you may have never had before, or old tried and true cookie recipes possibly made with a new twist.

Quite frankly, if I knew it was going to be an exchange with all Pillsbury slice and bake cookies, I'd skip it!

With any exchange I've ever been a part of, the participants were told a) how many people were taking part and b) how many cookies to bring for each participant. Usually in the 1/2 - 1 dozen range, per person.

I was just at a cookie exchange this Friday and 6 dozen is what we were asked to bring as well. I have to admit, it was the perfect amount, and there were 10 guests. We all got to sample some, and bring a nice sized tray home with us to share with the family.

The no bakes that I spoke about are not store bought cookies, but they are the type of cookies that are called no bake since there is no baking involved.
Here is a recipe-
No-Bake Chocolate Cookies
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup shortening
3 cups quick oatmeal
6 heaping T. cocoa
1 cup coconut
1 t. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt

Put sugar, milk and shortening in a pan and bring to a rolling boil. Remove from heat. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Drop by spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. No baking required!

I've never seen that recipe before, thanks for posting it! Do you refridgerate them, or just put them on a cookie sheet to take form?

It doesn't matter. If you want to you could just put them in a package or container.
Also, if you do a search on the internet for no bake cookies, there are a bunch of other recipes you could look at.

Mmmm...I love me some chocolate no bake cookies!

I've been to a few cookie exchanges in the past. The most I've been asked to bring is 10 dozen....there were 20 people there, so each person got 1/2 dozen. I came home with a huge tupperware container full of an awesome selection of cookies. At the exchanges I've been to, most people also print out the recipe for their cookies on a 3x5 card and give those to the other guests too so that they can make them at home afterwards if they so choose!

I usually make bar cookies that way I can cut them a little smaller and get more out of a recipe

This is a timely question! I just participated in a cookie exchange today at my school. This year we had 4 members in our group, and there were 6 groups. For my 4 member group, I baked 5 dozen cookies. I packaged up 4 dozen creatively. (I used Christmas ceramic plates, but some people used tins, buckets, boxes, etc.) I gave each member of my group a dozen and the remaining dozen was put on the sharing table. Then we all drank coffee, and sampled whatever cookies we wanted to try from the sharing table, and made ourselves a plate to take home of any cookies that we wanted from people who weren't in our group.

I got off easier this year. Last year there were 7 in my group, so that meant making 8 dozen! Now that was a chore!

We had a lot of fun!

Sniff, whine, I wish we had a cookie exchange.

I don't really have anyone that I could do this with since family members are busy or they live far away along with friends, but one of my friends who lives in MO. and I do a baking box and we exchanging baking items since we are not able to bake with each other.
