O Holy Night
Christmas Carol Lyrics

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O holy night, O night divine!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

This song is in memory of Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure. He wrote the words to this song in 1847.

A hymn for Christmas Day is here! Get the theme music here: http://carols.org.uk/ba25-hymn-for-christmas-day.htm

Hymn for Christmas Day Lyrics
Christmas Carol Lyrics
See amid the winter's snow,
Born for us on earth below,
See the tender Lamb appears,
Promised from eternal years.

Chorus
Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail, redemption's happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Lo, within a manger lies
He who built the starry skies;
He who throned in height sublime
Sits amid the cherubim. Chorus

Say, ye holy shepherds, say
What your joyful news today;
Wherefore have ye left your sheep
On the lonely mountain steep? Chorus

"As we watched at dead of night,
Lo, we saw a wondrous light; [1]
Angels singing peace on earth
Told us of the Saviour's birth". Chorus

Sacred infant, all divine,
What a tender love was thine,
Thus to come from highest bliss
Down to such a world as this. Chorus

Teach, O teach us , Holy Child,
By Thy Face so meek and mild,
Teach us to resemble Thee,
In Thy Sweet humility! Chorus

The words and lyrics of the old Christmas carol the 'Hymn for Christmas Day' which is also known as 'See Amid The Winter's Snow' were written by Edward Caswall (1814-1878). Caswell was the son of a vicar and attended Oxford University. In 1847 he converted to Catholic faith. He wrote original lyrics to hymns and also translated original Latin texts. The music was composed by John Goss (1800-1880). Goss was an organist at St Paul's Cathedral and a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music. He received a knighthood in 1872. In 1871 Henry Ramsden Bramley (1833-1917) and John Stainer (1840-1901) published the collection of 'Christmas Carols New and Old' in which the 'Hymn for Christmas Day ' was featured.
Our grateful thanks goes to Eric Halstead for giving his kind permission to play his self sequenced midi file of this superb piano rendition of this Christmas Carol.

Maybe I can memorise some more...

The theme for O Little Town of Bethlehem: http://carols.org.uk/o-l1ttle-town-of-bethlehem.htm

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight

For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth

How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heaven.
No ear may his His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him still,
The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born to us today
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel

O Little Town of Bethlehem !
Rector Phillips Brooks (1835-1903) of Philadelphia, wrote the words to O Little Town of Bethlehem in 1868, following a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He was inspired by the view of Bethlehem from the hills of Palestine especially at night time hence the lyrics of O Little Town of Bethlehem. His church organist Lewis Redner (1831-1908) wrote the melody to O Little Town of Bethlehem for the Sunday school children's choir

Theme for God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen: http://www.carols.org.uk/god_rest_ye_merry_gent1emen.htm

God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ, our Saviour
Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

In Bethlehem, in Israel,
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn
The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

From God our Heavenly Father
A blessed Angel came;
And unto certain Shepherds
Brought tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

"Fear not then," said the Angel,
"Let nothing you affright,
This day is born a Saviour
Of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him
From Satan's power and might."
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind:
And went to Bethlehem straightway
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

And when they came to Bethlehem
Where our dear Saviour lay,
They found Him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His Mother Mary kneeling down,
Unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas
All other doth deface.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen!
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen was first published in 1833 when it appeared in "Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern," a collection of seasonal carols gathered by William B. Sandys. The lyrics of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen are traditional olde English and are reputed to date back to the 15th century although the author is unknown.. It is believed that this particular carol was sung to the gentry by town watchmen who earned additional money during the Christmas season. The tradition of carol singing in towns and villages still lives on to this day and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen continues to be enjoyed.

Theme for Angels From The Realms Of Glory: http://www.carols.org.uk/ange1s_from_the_realms_of_glory.htm

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Shepherds, in the fields abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant Light;
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great desire of nations,
Ye have seen His natal star;
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Saints before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In His temple shall appear:
Come and worship,
Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Angels from the realms of glory!
The author of Angels From the Realms of Glory was an Irishman called James Montgomery. He came from a religious family background and sadly his parents, who were missionaries died following their vocation. Angels From the Realms of Glory was written in 1816. The music for Angels From the Realms of Glory was composed by Henry Smart. The lyrics of Angels From the Realms of Glory tell the story of the shepherds, sages and Saints

My personal favorite is "What Child is This" - I ALWAYS choke up during the second verse. Interestingly (sadly) most modern renditions do not include it. Here it is:

Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and lamb* are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Merry CHRISTmas!!!!

*auto editor deletes actual word here (alternative word for "donkey"). I substituted with "lamb".

SIX WHITE BOOMERS
Rolf Harris

Early on one Christmas Day, a Joey Kanga-roo
Was far from home and lost in a great big zoo

Mummy, where's my mummy, they've taken her a-way

We'll help you find your mummy son, just hop up on the sleigh

Up beside the bag of toys, little Joey hopped

But they hadn't gone far when Santa stopped

Un-harnessed all the reindeer and Joey wondered why

Then he heard a far off booming in the sky

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

.. On his Aus-tra-lian run

Pretty soon old Santa began to feel the heat

Took his fur-lined boots off to cool his feet

Into one popped Joey, feeling quite OK

While those old man kangaroos kept pulling on the sleigh

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

.. On his Aus-tra-lian run

Joey said to Santa, Santa, what about the toys

Aren't you giving some to all these girls and boys

They've all got their presents son, we were here last night

This trip is an extra trip, Joey's special flight

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

.. On his Aus-tra-lian run

Soon the sleigh was flashing past, right over Marble Bar

Slow down here, cried Santa, it can't be far

Come up on my lap here son, and have a look around

There she is, that's mummy, bounding up and down

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

.. On his Aus-tra-lian run

Well that's the bestest Christmas treat that Joey ever had

Curled up in mother's pouch all snug and glad

The last they saw was Santa heading northward from the sun

The only year the boomers worked a double run

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun

Six white boomers, snow white boomers

.. On his Aus-tra-lian run

We hope you enjoyed this Aussie Christmas Carol but we must add that Santa didn't really head back to the North Pole right away. He took some time out to soak up some Australian sun.

Merry Christmas to all
And to all a goodnight.

Here is another Aussie favourite.........

AUSSIE JINGLE BELLS

Dashing through the bush,
in a rusty Holden Ute,
Kicking up the dust,
esky in the boot,
Kelpie by my side,
singing Christmas songs,
It's Summer time and I am in
my singlet, shorts and thongs

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia
on a scorching summers day, Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute.

Engine's getting hot;
we dodge the kangaroos,
The swaggie climbs aboard,
he is welcome too.
All the family's there,
sitting by the pool,
Christmas Day the Aussie way,
by the barbecue.

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia
on a scorching summers day, Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute.

Come the afternoon,
Grandpa has a doze,
The kids and Uncle Bruce,
are swimming in their clothes .
The time comes 'round to go,
we take the family snap,
Pack the car and all shoot through,
before the washing up.

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Christmas in Australia
on a scorching summers day, Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden Ute.
