Christmas Cards...a thing of the past?

I love sending holiday cards. Every year it seems my list grows shorter with the passing of friends and family. People have moved, etc.

So many people now just email greetings or send nothing at all. My husband's company decided to stop sending cards and sent an electronic greeting this year.


Am I behind on the times? My neighbor told me she hates getting them because she feels obligated to send one in return.

I'm not doing them this year. I do LOVE getting them but something had to give and that was it. I'll do them again next year.

My husband is doing 80 or so, though. He has a big family and he enjoys writing to everyone.

I hate electronic Christmas cards, by the way. Do them right or don't do them at all.

My co-worker and I were just having the same type discussion about an hour ago! It feels like a lot of people have stopped sending cards. We suspect it is, in part, due to the expense during this economy. The cards themselves aren't so expensive but once you add in postage it can become costly. I love getting Christmas cards, too. My coworker and I both have noticed that we haven't gotten many cards this year compared to last year. I have only gotten three cards so far and usually I have quite a few. I hope people are just running behind in getting them out the door.

ME TOO!!! I love sending holiday cards. Mine are all done. I generally send about 50 or so cards. BUT I will say I have noticed a huge decline over the years. So far I have received 4. But that does not bother me. I will still send out my holiday cards, for now.

I did a photo card of a picture I took last month of our beautiful Newport Beach at sunset. CVS had a great deal, buy 60 get 20 free with a coupon. Gives me enough room to write a short note on the back. Takes me one evening while watching tv to get them all down. Easy.

Definitely a thing of my past! I stopped sending them out a few years ago when I realized that I thought of it as a chore and not as something I enjoyed doing. Cutting out cards and other holiday "chores" made my holidays less stressful and much more enjoyable!

Love sending them - love receiving them (but please save yourself the paper and leave out the "phoney baloney Christmas newsletter")..

And yes - I write them out by hand - sometimes include a short message - and address them myself..

Close family get special cards: mom; sis; brother; my children and stepchildren; grandchildren; etc..

I save the cards and often find ways to incorporate the scenes or wording in my scrapbooking..

I think I've received 22 as of today..

This thread reminds me of my mother.

She would knock herself out every year doing Christmas cards. Some years, all of them were hand made. (She is crafty). Or, she's write a personal paragraph to everyone asking about their folks and telling about hers.

She kept a log of about 150 names. It looked like a hand-drawn Excel sheet(This was before Excel). It had names and then years in a row with a check-marked off collumn. She'd send them to everyone on the list but if they didn't send one for three years in a row, they got crossed off the list.

I love cards! I still get a bunch, but a lot of them are just their kids' pictures (which I love to see). I am in my 30's and will say that most of my friends have gone to preprinted. I still write ours by hand. I think it adds a personal touch.

I was thinking about cards this morning. I want to take pictures of our girls for christmas, but I don't know if I want to do the whole card thing. To me, if I see you all the time, what do you need a card for? And if I never see you, do you really CARE to get a card from us - we can't be bothered to get together! LOL

I send out about 40 every year, hand written and addressed. I love getting them too.

I went 2yrs in a row after we moved to try and shake off the card list. Now I only send them to immediate family and close relatives.

I will send off some friends, if they send me one.

I love sending Christmas cards and I shop carefully to find just the right card. I usually buy two different designs---one for adults and one for children. This year's adult card features an early twentith century winter scene outside of the New York Public Library's Fifth Avenue branch. The cards that I sent to the overseas children that I sponsor were purchased at WDW and featured Mickey and Minnie sledding down a slope. Whenever I have extra cards, I send them to military personnel and veterans via the annual Red Cross campaign.

Instead of giving out christmas cards at work, what we all do is put in 2 or 3 pounds into a kitty and that money goes to a local charity. Usually manage to collect about £70 for one of the local hospics.

I've always liked sending cards. But I have a very short list. However, if I'm too busy they are first things to drop off the list. This year I'm not working so I handmade my cards and added a standard "wishing you a very ... blah blah blah". Don't know if I will do it next year though. I may just buy them. I don't receive very many.

I enjoy sending cards, but only send to friends who are far away that I don't see or talk to often. I also enjoy receiving cards from far away friends with letters and pictures. I have no desire to exchange cards with people I see all the time. It's a card with their name written on it, I don't get it?

Honestly, it makes total sense for businesses to stop sending cards. Does anyone really value those? I know I don't.
