I have imagined the beauty of the parks at the holidays.......always wanted to see it decorated. DH always said NO we MUST be home for the holidays. We typically go to WDW the week of Independence Day but aren't able to this year. Due to his vacation and the way the holidays fall this year, DH said we can go the week between Christmas & New Years, so I'M hoping for Pixie Dust that our waitlist comes through at AKV for the Tues & Wed that week. If not, we may look elsewhere at 7 months, but either way we're going!

So, my question to all you CHRISTMAS VETS.....any tips for us Winter Holiday Newbies?

TIA
Micaela

I am planning our first Disney Christmas Trip this year as well... and after doing a lot of reading and research I am prepared for astronomical crowds and to NOT get a lot accomplish but to just enjoy the Disney atmosphere and the fact that we are there....

If there is anyway that you can swing it to go before christmas week, that is the best. We have gone the 2nd week in Dec the past 2 years and it is amazing.

Nothing is more beautiful than Disney during the holidays. Really something special. The added bonus is that there are no crowds. We generally wait 5-10 minutes for most rides.

If you can only go during christmas week, we have never been but yes it will be crowded. It will still be magical, you just get less accomplished.

You'll love it either way.

We went this past year from Dec 18 - 26, crowds really picked up after the 21st. We went down knowing it would be crowded but loved it anyway. It is a "must do" at least once IMHO. The decorations are great all the Christmas extras like MVMCP and the CP are a must

We have been there the past four years between Christmas and New Years and it's wonderful. We generally arrived a day or two after Christmas and stay into January since we are travelling a distance. Up to New Year's Day the crowds are busy but we were there this past July 1st week and the crowds were equally as busy. If you plan ahead-be at the parks early and take advantage of evening EMH then you will have no problem. Our boys love to spend the pm at the resort enoying the pool, playing tennis, etc. so it works well. We are going to be there for our first Christmas morning this year and can't wait. Feel free to ask any questions that come to mind-I will be happy to try and answer them.

We've gone to WDW for Christmas the past 3 years and always leave on Dec. 25th. The crowds do pick up a lot the closer it gets to Christmas, but it is still a very magical experience. Just make sure to get fastpasses to your favorite attractions early in the day since many of the popular attractions like Test Track and Soarin' run out by noon. Write down the days and times of the parades and holiday events you want to see. I also recommend doing the Yuletide Fantasy Tour if your kids meet the age requirement. It takes about 3 hours, but it is well worth it if you want to get a behind the scenes overview of how Disney pulls together all of the holiday magic. If you happen to go over to the Grand Floridian, make sure to check out their beautiful gingerbread house. It looks and smells just wonderful! I wouldn't buy the gingerbread cookies they sell. They don't taste very gingerbread-like, they are more like sugar cookies and they're expensive.

Ahhh our favorite time of the year, altough we do not travel between christmas and new year .. but rather the weeks leading up to Christmas. This year it will be the week before christmas week ..can't wait ...

When we visit in December we concentrate on the holiday events as opposed to going into the parks for the attractions. Here's our guideline:

The Deluxe Resorts .. Most are decked out in their holiday finest and are worth the effort to visit and spend some time checking out the decorations, entertainment etc ..
Grand Floridian .. An amazing tree and full size ginger bread house that has an actual store inside! Their lobby is very inviting with cozy places to sit, sip a drink and listen to music, etc., Check out their schedule and time your visit with their entertainment ..you can call the front desk and obtain information.
Wilderness Lodge .. Another beautiful lobby and tree not to be missed!
Boardwalk and Beach Club -- Amazing displays in chocolate and gingerbread!!
Animal Kingdom ... Very beautiful tree and lobby area
In years past the dolphin or swan had a huge tree in their lobby made out of poinsettias with a large train set around the tree ..there was a man playing carols on the piano, tables and chairs, and it was great to sit, listen or sign along.
The Poly and Contemporary are decorated, but unless they've changed in the past year, their decorations don't have the same wow factor as the other deluxe resorts.

We normally rent a car and spend one day resort hopping to check out all the decorations ...once you pay for valet parking once, you don't have to pay again ..however, now that AK is now a DVC resort, the only place you'll need to pay for valet is the Grand Floridian .. or, if you want, just hop on the monrail after spending time in the MK ... then after your visit to the GF hop back on the monorail to the MK for your resort bus ride home.

Epcot ...
During the Day, they have Christmas around the world .. there is a published schedule with times during the day that every country will have someone come out (in their traditional costume) and tell the story of how their country celebrates this season. Excellent
Not to be missed .... The candle light processional ..this is our all time favorite, it's uplifting, inspirational and beautiful ..we always do the dinner package, get in line a bit early and then aim for a seat mid-way up from the stage ...before the line of trees ..for an excellent view of the cast and guest narrator. Given the crowds during the time you plan to visit I would recommend a dinner package when they go on sale this summer I would reserve immediaely.
Tree lighting and the lights of winter ... The Epcot tree is beautiful and the lights of winter arches are fun to sit and watch as the lights are in motion to music. There is a tree lighting every evening that is very nice too.
Illuminations -- it is the regular illuminations show, but at the end of the regular show there is a special holiday ending that is beautiful.

Magic Kingdom .. OK this park looks like a normal rockwell painting .. mainstreet is decked out you have beautiful views looking down the street to the castle and back to the trainstation with christmas tree. last year, they added the "ice" to the castle ..we haven't seen it yet, but the pictures are fantastic ..we can wait to see it this year A tree lighting takes place here every day too.
Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party -- shows, a great parade, snow, hot chocolate and cookies .. the parade is wonderful ..and sitting for a spell (go to the ice cream parlor) and watching the snow on mainstreet with the holiday music and watching the people is fun ..grab a holiday hat and join the fun!!

MGM and AK -- their trees are outside the park gates ..
AK -- camp minnie mickey you can see all the characters in their holdiay finest and they have the jingle jammin parade at 4 pm every day.
MGM ... main street is decked out for the holiday ..but not to be missed are the osborne lights .. over 5 million lights ...with changes every year ...simply amazing

Going to disney during the holidays is a guaranteed way to get into the holiday spirit, we were unable to go last year and I have to say I never was able to find my holiday spirit and we really missed being at Disney during this time frame.

As a DVC member, if you staying at one of the larger resorts, like OKW, you'll see the members also get into the spirit and bring lights for the decks, etc. We do too ..we get a small tree from walmart and a string of lights for inside our unit and then put lights outside too ..it's great to come home at night and see the placed all decked out ..not only by Disney, but by the members themselves.

Sorry this is so long ..but wanted to share all of our favorites with you ...

one thing to watch for ..the travel channel .. Samatha Brown has done a couple of shows at Disney during Christmas, she did a new one last year that includes the new ice show on the castle ...I'm sure it will be on during the fall again ..not sure if the Samatha Brown shows are available as a rental or not.

Good luck with your wait list, but if you must book at the 7 month mark, don't delay ....it's a VERY busy time of the year!!

Enjoy,
Peggy

Three year veteran of the NYE week crowds here! We are going back agin this year for the fourth year!

The parks are decorated to the max.Love, love, love all the christmas decorations and all of the extra shows, fireworks, etc. The parks are crazy crowded, but you've been at July 4th.....not much different. Just not as hot and humid, and even more people. The EMH are insane, MK open on the 30th until 4am, DHS open until 3am on NYE. Osborne Lights are not to be missed. Candlelight Processional is not to be missed. The NYE fireworks are absolutely incredible.

Just start planning now. Make ADR's at the 180 day mark. Use the early EMH days. Relax and just enjoy your trip and no comando!

Great advice from everyone.

We're, or at least I (the family planner) am thinking of approaching this from a more laid back position this year. The main reason to go would be to enjoy the holiday things (deco, shows, lights). We typically go with TGM, but may not need to if we plan on keeping our rides to a minimum. You mention Osbiurne Lights and CP....are these hard ticket items that I should looking into purchaing? It seems like I vaguely remember hearing people talk about these being 'SOLD OUT' before.

This was pretty much our plan when we went Christmas week a couple of years ago. Enjoy the parades and visit the resorts. Hit the parks but use FP and don't plan on hitting a ton of attractions each day.

As an idea, here's Sunset Blvd from Christmas, 2006 showing the typical crowds that week:

This thread made me :goodvibes

We are a family of 5 that goes to WDW every year for the 4th of July! :thumbsup2 Yes, the crowds are insane, but we've learned our way around it. We somehow manage to take in 20+ attractions on the 4th -- with a mid-day nap at our resort! :rotfl:

This year, we are adding a trip between Christmas & NYE! We'll be there with tomandrobin at SSR! We can't wait!!! Like the OP, we are doing research to plan our trip for this week. We are quite prepared for the crowd level .... we're expecting something a little worse than July 4th --- but not quite as hot ....... right? :confused3

Thanks for the feedback from other experienced visitors! We'll be reading along for tips for our family as well ....... popcorn::

Hahaha.....:goodvibes Us, too! ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS....go down over the 4th of July week. We don't think it's too bad, probaly because we've been down there so many times that week we've manage to find what works for us that week. That and we've used TGM a couple times to maximize our ride times.

Osbourne lights is not a hard ticket event. Definitely something to see. We saw it last year for the 1st time and it is just amazing.

The CP is different. If you want to guarentee a seat you need to buy a dinner package. It includes dinner at an Epcot Restaurant and entrance to the theater. Prices vary depending upon the restaurant you choose. If you do not want to do the dinner package, you can get in line and wait. Any left over seats not used in the dinner package are first come first server.

Another option is just stand. The past 2 years we were afraid to go because dd was little (2 1/2 and then 3 1/2). She has LOTS of energy and no way would sit still the entire show. What we did was just get some snacks and glass of wine and sit/stand in and around the walkway in the world showcase. You can see the stage and hear the music you just don't have an actual seat. This worked out great because we could take turns running and playing with dd and listening to the music. It is something to see and hear. Probably I favorite thing about Dinsey at christmas time.

Enjoy.

We have been at WDW for 4th of July too. In fact we are going to be there July 3rd thru the 6th this year again!

We have hit almost every holiday at WDW, except Easter and Thanksgiving.

I am so excited...I just booked my trip for December. We are staying at SS from 12/27 to 12/30. I can not wait to see all the decorations.

I'm thinking the CP Dinner would be nice......we LOVE Le Cellier! I noticed the $$ on AllEars, but it doesn't list what's included. Something like $40's per person, do you happen to know what's included in that price? Like Appy, Dinner, Dessert, and non-alch bev?

I'm getting soooo excited hearing about ALL the fun things at the holiday season, and we're still 9 months away! :rotfl: And I'm still waitlisted for 2 of my 6 nights! :scared:

that is awesome......try to see the July 4th fireworks at MK on the 3rd it you want to see it. We did last year and it was the best. Then we hit Epcot for the 4th....another spectacular show. We were able to sneak out through the International Gate Exit and missed the mass exodis at the front gate (of course we stayed at the BCV, so that helped).

The only holidays we've been able to experience thus far is July 4th and Memorial Day. We did however hit DL CA Presidents Wk a couple years ago! And we're on the Magic for Valentine's Day this year! I look foward to experiencing more holidays in the future as DS's school schedule permits.

Last year with the CP dinning package included exactly that, ( an appy, main course, dessert and non alch beverage). To get Le Cellier you better be on the phone at the 190 day mark as it sells out quickly. Make your dinner ressies at least 3 - hours in advance of the CP to get a good seat. Even the reserved seating line gets long as people start lining up a couple of hours before their show seating.

I almost forgot, the CP dining package reserves you seating for the CP.
