We made it to the Fort for Christmas 2010. This is our tenth visit to Disney World, but our first visit to Fort Wilderness. It was 74 degrees upon arrival compared to 30's back home in Northern Virginia. We arrived on Tuesday Dec 22 around 10:30 AM and was greeted by Disney CM whom immediately assigned us to lot 931. We were ready for 10 days at the Fort. When I got to our site, I found that we backed up to 929 and was closed to the main road and confort station. We were pretty close, actually, and across from the Meadows Campground Store... so convenient!
This trip included an unbelievable amount of magic and pixie dust. Let's start by saying that we got stuck on the Big Thunder Mountain ride in Magic Kindgmon and the track engineers had to rescue us from the ride , not a big deal as we were on the way up to the second set or rollers when this happen and we were able to get off the car and walk back to the entrance through the underground tunnels. That is a backstage tour "FREE" with four Free passes for anytime any day to ride the Mountain again at our leissure. That same day the boys had dinner with Chef Mickey at Contenporany Resort. It is not as it used to be, the prices have gone up $$$ and the variety has gone down. The boys also had breakfast at Animal Kingdom with Donal Duck and pals on the 27th. In ten visits to the Disney World, this is the first time we were able to meet and greet Daisy and take our picture with her. Now that is an awesom breakfast, lots of variety, good food, great serves... a must to anyone looking for a great breakfast within the parks.
The campground is huge. We wanted to use the bus system inside the campground and found that they run anywhere between 10 and 25 minutes in between, so it was not easy to track their times and we ended up waiting in several occasions for more than we wanted too in 30's degrees temperture. We had the opportunity to enjoy the pool one day while at 74 degrees and it was relaxing after all those days of walking and standing in line for rides. I will add that we rode every ride in every park at least once, mostly between 23 and 27 before the crowds got in. Of course we started the days at 7am on magic hours (guests)before the rest of the people got to the parks. Items at the Meadows Store are not cheap, but some are not outrageous either. I got a dozen of eggs for $1.95 and Ice 10# for$2.95 reasonable for a resort.
The park and campgrounds started to fill up on Dec. 25th and campers were backed up waiting to check in in every lane at the trading post. Not so magical.
We spent a little time looping and checking out some of the decorations already in place at other loops. Sooner than we thought it was 35 degrees on Christmas day and few days after, but warm weather returned on the 28th until the day we left Jan 1, 2011. We went to Hollywood Studios, Epcot and Animal Kingdom between Dec 23 and 27, trying to avoid the crowds and it paid off. Yes, Dec 26 was packed and thereafter it was so crowded all rides had 2 and 3 hour waiting times.
MK was still a bit busy when we arrived around 10am after breakfast with Characters on 12/31. So we headed to Tommorrowland to visit Space Mountain and Buzz Light year ride. We used the Free passes to the Mountain ride at least three times and gave the last set of passes to another family with small children. The MK was open until midnight on Dec 31. And, then it was Extra Magic Hours until 3 am Dec 31. Yes I said 3 am. We have done it before, and we were going to do it again. Naa!!! we started that day at 8 am with breakfast with Lilo and Stitch and by 12pm we were all bumb-out ready for bed. So we saw the great show of fireworks from the marina at Ft. Wilderness with another 100 campers rather than at the park as we intended.
Then Jan 1 arrived and it was time to pack, clean and head back home until another day at another campground. It took us 15 hours straight from Herndon, VA to Disney Ft Wilderness, and over 19 hours on the way back because we stop at South of the Border and Crackle Barrel, rest areas and so many places.
Here are some random pictures from the campground, wildlife, Animal Kingdom, Magik Kingdom, MGM, EPCOT, and Disney. Enjoy !
