Hey All....

My family goes to Disney annually. Typically we go in April or August. We are pros for the most part.

Well, with the way our kids schedules are shaping up for next year, it appears that Christmas might be the only time we can go. Like, literally be at Disney that break between Christmas and New Years'.

Hit me with it. How bad is it? We have been over Thanksgiving and it was crazy crowded and we are expecting worse than that of course. :scared:

Give me all of your tips to make a Christmas trip enjoyable. Thanks!! :goodvibes

Yes, it really is that crazy ... to the point of the MK parking lot filling to capacity, resulting in a solid traffic jam between Epcot and MK on World Drive type of crazy.

But, being in WDW, with the family, with CM's sincerely wishing you a Merry Christmas is one of the most amazing experiences :goodvibes

Expecting to do a ton of rides would likely be disappointing, but enjoying the season is great.

We have been to Disney 4 separate times over Christmas. The crowds are very busy but we think that it is definitely worth being there over the Christmas Holiday. It is truly "magical" seeing all of the beautiful decorations and wonderful parade with Santa. It always seems like everyone is in such a great mood that week... including the cast members who give up their holiday to make ours so special. Go... You won't regret it!!

We went with 18 family members in 2007 and will be going with 30 in 2018. The reason we're going in 2018 is because 2007 was one of the best Christmas' we ever had. It was really magical and more than we had expected.

We arrived on the 18th and did most of what we wanted by the 24th. Then from the 24th until the 27th we didn't expect to get much done so it was a pleasant surprise if we did accomplish anything.

Doing a good amount of planning ahead of time was critical then and is a necessity now. There's no such thing as winging a Christmas trip so plan and be flexible and you'll be rewarded.

Go early in the morning- as early as possible. Sometimes in the afternoons the crowds at MK can get so thick that you won't fall down if you pick both feet up off the ground. :-)

It is fun, but get your rides out of the way first thing every morning. Plan some out of park time if crowds bother you.

I love Christmas at Disney. It's such a blast being with all those people. And that's ironic coming from an extreme introvert.

Get your ADRs and FPs done early, because once the 180 day mark for ADRs and 60 days for FPs breaks, supply will dwindle very quickly. Pretty soon, all you'll find is a 10:30 reservation for Liberty Tree Tavern, Fastpasses for Barnstormer and Small World, and not much else.

Yes, it's nuts. No, you're not riding many rides. The crowd calendars will say that almost every day, every park will be at least a 9. Most of the crowds will be a 10, which is like a sardine moving in a can. On Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, expect MK to go all the way to 11! Each day has a threat of the park entrances closing due to crowds, but 12/25 and 12/31 are the most likely. When we went to MK on 12/31/14, they were bringing the Level 1 closure signs out at 10:00, with talk that they might have to flip it to level 2 as the signs were getting placed.

Wait times are long. Most of the E-ticket rides are at 120-150 minutes all day. The not-so-E-ticket rides were sitting at 90-120 minutes. Stitch's Great Escape once had a posted time of 60 minutes! Who waits an hour for that?

So why do I love Christmas? I don't know. I think it's just wanting to spend the end of the year with probably, what, maybe 200,000 or so people? I just love watching all the smiles, and all the cheer, knowing you'll be at the best fireworks show to end the calendar, anywhere. It's the laughter and the camaraderie. It's being with people who are thankful for what the last year had brought, and looking forward to what the next year will bring.

It's the decorations, it's the extra touches that everything gets. The lights, the music, the vibe. It's unique to Christmas.

There's special events all over. At Epcot, if you want to do things like the Candlelight Processional at Epcot, make sure to book a package which includes a meal. They also give you tickets good for one show that day, the show time will be on the ticket. Without that, the standby line can be hours, with no guarantee you'll get a seat. At the Magic Kingdom, you may have to stake your spot for the fireworks early. Some people start as early as noon. I did the dessert party on New Year's Eve, and it was fantastic! We had our own spot to see Holiday Wishes, and we didn't have to stand still for 12 hours.

But in a nutshell, keep your expectations low. Find things off the beaten path. Know that getting from point A to point B will be a little more difficult. TS restaurants may be backed up, no, they will be backed up. Lines for everything from cashing in Fastpasses, to getting a cheeseburger, to getting on a bus, will all take more time than normal. Keep that in mind, and everything will be a perk.

Even with all the crowds and all the celebrations, one of my best times was in a quiet pool at POR, at the end of New Year's Day, by myself. Me, my thoughts, and a little puddle of water at Walt Disney World. I had the hotel room smelling like chlorine when I went back in, and it bothered my family. I loved it!

But if it's one thing I implore you to bring to this trip, it's patience.

Christmas at WDW is awesome. I disagree with most that it's too crowded to get things done, you need a ton of planning, etc... That's just not our experience. MK on Christmas Day itself is nuts, yes. But outside of that, it's really no different than 4th of July week or other holidays. Busy, but you absolutely can have a blast. We're not planners at all, and we had no trouble getting on tons of rides, including e-ticket ones. Go for it, you'll LOVE it.

We did it in 2015 and AK, DHS and EP were doable. MK was SO crowded. Crowded to the point that if we ever did it again (which we won't, we adjusted our Dec. dates to the week before and it was SO much better), I wouldn't visit MK that week! DS was really bad, too. I'm talking, you can't move bad.

My advice, if you can swing it stay at an MK or EP resort (our favorites are the EP resorts as I would rather rely on our feet than even the monorail). Staying at BWV was our saving grace as all Disney transportation will be busy (monorails, buses, boats) and traffic is horrendous. It was so nice to simply be able to walk to EP and DHS. DHS, surprisingly (as it was the last year of Osborne Lights) wasn't really that crowded at all. EP - I suggest touring WS in the morning and FW in the afternoon/evenings to avoid the CP crowds that make walking through the middle section of WS virtually impossible. If there are any tours you've ever wanted to do, now is the time (anything that's running during that time frame). We always wanted to do Wild Africa Trek, so we did it on 12/26 which gave us the opportunity to get an in depth look at the savannah and avoid the general AK crowds (it was great!). MK - as others have said, go as soon as the park opens and, if crowds aren't your thing, prepare to leave around lunch time (wall to wall people by then). Do NOT attempt QS (especially in MK). The lines are literally out the door and there is no where to sit. When we were in MK (on 12/29), DS9 and I sat on a rock by a garbage can to eat some popcorn - literally, there is no where to sit. Make ADR's. Make FP+. And lower your expectations regarding what you will be able to accomplish in the amount of time you typically do on your other trips.

We LOVE Christmas at Disney and go every year. We have a super awesome guide that helps us plan, get around, etc. Outside of that we simply think it is the best time of year to be there. My kids don't remember Christmas where they weren't at Disney. Now because we go every year (and this year we just got back from a July trip) we don't stress about doing everything / seeing everything. I will say while we were on our July trip the kids asked where all of the people were :-) ... especially at Disney Springs.

My brother-in-law and his family go to WDW on the week between Christmas and New Years, and the parks are packed with people. Riding no more than three rides a day at MK kind of packed.

He's been there on a day when non-resort guests at MK were not allowed in the park because MK was reaching capacity.

Thank you guys for the responses!!!

DH and I know it will be super packed, but we are actually getting really excited about finally doing Christmas at Disney!!! I'm sure it will probably be the only time we do it, LOL. :rotfl:

I'm sure we'll want to do the Candlelight Processional, and MVMCP. Are there any other special events that I should look into? Luckily, during our Thanksgiving trip several years ago, we were able to see the Osbourne Lights.

I've been over New Year's Eve. It was PACKED. Parks hit capacity, long wait times, tons of crowds. That being said, it was still a lot of fun! I remember that trip specifically because my dad & I went to EPCOT and my mom & younger siblings went to AK on NYE. I wanted to go straight to Epcot because I was afraid the park would hit capacity and I'd miss the fireworks. My dad hates crowds and didn't want to do the rides, so we spent all day in the world showcase. We just went around it slowly, snacked, and tried on silly hats in the gift shops. I wish I knew where those pictures were! If you do go, just know what you're getting into, and have a "lazy day" plan for if you can't get on rides. It's still lots of fun!

They do narrators in the world showcase where they tell you about Christmas traditions around the world, I thought that was fun! And I believe a lot of people like resort hopping at Christmas to see all of the different decorations.

The storytellers in Epcot are my favourite. :)

We go to Disney every August, but have also gone the past four Decembers. Christmas at Disney really is magical! If you want to do rides, go super early.
7am in the MK on Christmas Day is awesome! There is no place I'd rather be. :santa:

I would suggest booking a CP dining package to secure seating for the show. They won't hold MVMCP during the week between Christmas and New Year's (there are just too many people there to close the park for a hard ticket event), but they will run the Christmas parade during regular park hours in MK. The storytellers in EP are wonderful. They did Jingle Jam at DHS last year, but no one knows if that will continue. If they bring Club Villain back, I highly recommend it. Do a monorail hotel tour (GF is amazing!).

The week between Christmas and NYE will have no MVMCP...but (in past years) you get the Christmas parade every day, and the Christmas Wishes every night (until Dec 30 when they change to NYE) with regular park admission :)

We will be there a few days before Christmas so we can try to slip it into the schedule. :)

. In general, the last MVMCPs are said to be packed, and many would rather experience the same parade and fireworks without the extra cost.
(I think many buy the tickets thinking it's the last time the Christmas parade and fireworks will be shown that year)

As much as I loved MVMCP, and would pay earlier in the season, I wouldn't pay for the last events since I still get the great parade and fireworks on normal park days.

I didn't read through all your responses but I can tell you that my family of four (kids were 18 and 22) went between Christmas and New Year's Day last year.
I can also promise and say we did not wait in one single line, REALLY, I promise.
We stayed at SSR in a THV.
Our flight into Orlando landed before 8:30 am and I have a picture of my dd and dh standing in front of the ME ropes with not one person behind them.
We left our villa every day a few minutes before an hour before opening (parks opened at 7 am, maybe 6 am one day I don't remember) every day.
We were the first set of people waiting for the parks to open (we did MK, Epcot and AK).
We went to DTD on our off days and our dinner ressies were always around 8 pm.
We did all our rides we wanted and planned our FPs for our return in the evening (with exception of AK, we booked FPs for right before/after lunch cannot remember).
In the evenings at MK and Epcot, we used our FPs and then just were able to enjoy fireworks, snacks, etc. and got in a few rides I think.
I made sure our transportation was minimized and didn't want to fight crowds on busses (actually when we left AK, we were one of a few families on the bus and in the mornings, we either had the bus to ourselves or just a few people on with us...SO WORTH IT). Since we stayed at SSR, I planned our
meals at DTD and we walked or took the boat and had one dinner at Turf Club at SSR, wow, what a hidden gem.

The trick is to always be ahead of the crowds and get up and out early, VERY early. We all got up and did what we needed to do to not have a stressful
day and for the most part, the park days we came back to villa and the "kids" napped (I guess we all did LOL).

Enjoy! Although I prefer the crowds of September (I'll be going in 44 days!), I would go back during Christmas in a second as long as you
are very thorough in your planning. Oh, I also had MM and had a LOT of pictures and many with characters...go figure!

I'm very glad that many people like going to WDW on Christmas week and I hope that all those going have a great time, but I'm not one of them. I'll hopefully be as far away from WDW as I can get.
