I am wondering how does everyone open their advent calendars? Do you open number 1 first and count up to Christmas or open number 24 first and countdown to Christmas?

Start at 1 and work your way up to 24. Gift number 24 is always the most unique, expensive, or special gift. So you open that on Christmas Eve. :)

Yeah, I know.....if we’re talking about a cheap chocolate advent calendar, maybe number 24 just has a different colour of foil, but still more special than the others. Lol.

Ours isn't numbered. It's a handpainted Christmas tree on a framed wooden board, with a blank wooden calendar grid beneath. Each square on the grid has a tiny golden nail where you hang a tiny wooden handpainted ornament. Ornaments are placed on the grid according to that year's December calendar and each day's ornament is taken from the calendar and moved to the tree above, ending with the star tree topper on Christmas morning.

That sounds lovely.

If you are talking about the commercially available cardboard boxes with chocolate, I count up. Why?

Because the big chocolate is labeled 24. You don't get the big chocolate on December 1, you get it on Christmas Eve

kids advent calendars are designed to count up. Adult ones often don't matter as much, at least in my experience. Personally, I tend to forget a day here and there, and figure it out later. I can barely seem to keep track of which day I should be opening when the number matches the calendar. If I start backwards, I would forever be re-counting to see if I had missed a day or not. That sounds horrible.

My advent calendar has tiny ornaments in each cubby. I have a small tree that slowly gets decorated with each day. The final week has: a donkey, 3 wise men, Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. (these are small figures to make up the Nativity) My mom gave this to me years ago and it is so special.
BTW I start at 1 and day 25 is the door that baby Jesus is in. Couldn't understand starting at 25.

We have been starting them on the 24th. Helps my son see how many days left until Christmas so he isn’t asking everyday.

Start at 1 and go up, ending on the 24th. It honestly never occurred to me to do the opposite.

This sounds so cool my daughter would love this.
