Choosing Where to Eat in HHI

Headed to HHI in a little over 2 months!!! We've been thinking about some places we would like to eat. Generally, we eat out only for dinner, but there are a few places we also go for lunch. We will be there 5 nights/4 full days. Here are the definites:

Skull Creek Boathouse (dinner)
Guiseppi's (dinner)
Dye's Gullah Fixin's (lunch buffet)
One Hot Mamma's (lunch takeout special)

So we need 3 more dinners. We will probably go to Steamer Seafood. We are WKU alumuni, so we went there last time for the experience. I wasn't crazy about the food, but my DH really wants to go back.

I was thinking about going to Roastfish and Cornbread, but the reviews on Tripadvisor say it has really gone downhill and the service is terrible. Anyone been there recently?

I thought about the Sea Shack, but isn't it better to go at lunch?

I know a lot of people here rave about a Lowcounty Backyard. Looking at the menu, I really wish there were more seafood selections. When I visit HHI, I want LOTS of seafood. Not sure I want to give up a night of seafood for this.

Any suggestions?

Sea Shack was just as enjoyable to us when we went for dinner last fall instead of lunch. Just a word of warning-they don't have a separate take-out line, at least they didn't in November. We saw a few people come up and try to go in the out door, explaining "Oh, I'm just here to pick up my take out order." Everyone has to stand in the same line. And when we went in November, it was the only resturaunt where we waited. We enjoyed the Black Marlin, also. That's interesting about Roastfish and Cornbread. I know we've eaten there in the last couple of years, and enjoyed it, especially their sweet potato fries. If you want recommendations, you might ask Gordon in the Mercantile. He's a chef, so when it comes to food, he's your man!

Good to know about the Sea Shack for dinner. I guess I was just thinking there would be a longer line at dinner. We usually don't like going out for lunch because it just disrupts the day, having to stop what we're doing to get cleaned up for a meal. Our one exception is Dye's lunch buffet! Heaven!!!

Thanks for the advice about the Black Marlin. I see it is owned by the same people as Skull Creek Boathouse. So since we love the food there, I guess it would be similar food but with a different atmosphere. May be a great choice for us. Thanks for the suggestion!

If you like Mexican I always tell people to go to Santa Fe, it is very close to DVC resort. And someone in the group has to order the Painted Desert soup. You will know why when you see it, and it is delicious.

No, we do not like Mexican, but thanks anyway. We are mainly interested in seafood, steaks, and low country cooking. We do LOVE Japanese, too, but we can get that here.

Our favorite restaurant is Old Oyster Factory. Not real wild about Sea Shack - seafood a little too greasy for us. Second favorite is Mrs. Wilkes in Savannah. Plus we like San Miguel's.

When we (actually I) was looking for seafood, Captain George (I think that was his name) that runs the dolphin tours for Disney recommended Hudson's on the Docks. He said it was one of the few seafood restaurants on HHI that serves fresh local seafood. The rest he said all ship it in. He wasn't kidding about the seafood being fresh. The restaurant is on the docks because they own their own boats that go out and catch most of their seafood daily. I know others rave about other seafood restaurants on the island, and I can't disagree with them because I haven't tried them, but I was quite impressed with Hudson's.

One thing to point out though, if you go there, remember you are going for the food not the decor. Not that it is bad, but it is a very "old school" seafood house.

Yes, we've been to Hudson's. After our fishing excursion, we took our fish there and they cooked them for us. You are right about the decor though! I plan to do this again if we have a good catch.

Incredible live music each night and great food too. My favorite restaurant on the island and we go every year when visiting my parents who live on HHI now.

I agree wise guys definitely had a strange vibe. I would think that I should've been ready for a place like that, Going in I didn't expect to experience the techno music. That is provided with your dinner. You definitely have to be dressed up and it helps to know what you're walking into. That being said, I really enjoyed the food However it was on the obnoxious side. I would like to go back to experience Appetizers and drinks rather than a full on dinner. I also think the hostesses could be a little bit more service friendly, but then again I think this place is just like that in general and attitude is just a part of the experience...

Oh gosh you would ask me that! It's been 2 or 3 years now....but I want to say that Sea Pines sounds familiar. We would've gone to whichever one was the closest to the resort.

Any chance you like Thai? There is a sensational Thai restaurant almost directly across the street from the DVC resort. When we get tired of seafood (after two nights at Hudson's) we get Thai for a break. Then back to seafood...

Thanks. Actually after doing a little research, the one on Pope Avenue is closer to the resort. In fact, it looks like you drive right by it to get to Sea Pines. It also looks like their menu is the same. I had heard of this restaurant a few years ago, but I was thinking they had different menus at the different locations. I guess not, or else they have changed. We may try this one instead of a Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant. Their menu didn't really appeal to my DH (loves meatloaf, HATES peaches!), but he liked the Truffles menu.

We have never tried Thai. And with only 5 nights on the island, we probably don't want to chance trying something we may not like. We'll probably stick with a combination of seafood (my DSs and I can eat this every night and never get tired of it!), steaks for DH, and low country cooking. Thanks for the suggestion though.

We personally love Crazy Crab. The shrimp there is so good. There are two on the island one in Harbortown and the other is located as you come in on the main road. Either is good. The shrimp salad is really good.

Just so you know, Dye's Gullah Fixins' has moved to a new location, much closer to the resort. While I don't know the new address off the top of my head here is the website. Also, she no longer takes credit cards....just cash.

I think there actually used to be a Truffles Cafe and a Truffles Grill maybe. Now it appears the Cafe is the only choice. I'm sure somebody else would know about the change / difference. If the one on Pope is closer then that's where we would have gone... Anyway, we enjoyed it and they had a nice selection on the menu.

We always pick a night to do burgers and dogs on the grill by the marsh. That's as close as I have to a waterfront outdoor kitchen. With the Piggly Wiggly right be the resort it is easy to grab what you need if you don't bring provisions. My favorite restaurants have already been named.
