I'm trying to find a good airfare for my trip in october.

but one of my main concern is getting seat assignments. I know some airlines charge for advance seat assignement, and some wait for online check in 24 hours before, on a first come first serve basis. (I mean cattle class, not preferred seats)

Can anyone tell me what are the policies regarding seat assignments for US air carriers.

I already know for united, where you can reserve seats free of charge from the moment you get your etickets
but I'd like to know for American Airlines, US airways, and Delta.

AA is free and you can choose imediately.
You can also change around your seats right up to before check in starts if better seats (for us that means further forward and quieter - 10/13) become available if we hadn't already got what we wanted.

We travel to MIA from CDG with AA and have never had any problems with them. :)

The main culprit for advance seat booking hassle these days is BA who do let you book seats but charge you for the privilage.

AA,Delta, US Air and United all ok for advance seats. KLM let you book within 90 days of travel and Virgin look ok for advance seating at time of booking.

you reserve your seat on delta right when you buy your ticket.
when you buy online, choosing your seat is one of the steps in the process -
