Choosing plane tickets- 38m layover in ATL?

Couldn't we access the information before we even take off? I was planning to check periodically at my originating gate. Definitely, not while we're already in the air. That way, we could notify our gate agent at CVG, and possibly get a cart for my 77-year old MIL.
You can. But gate assignments are subject to change. That's why I like checking (even if I've checked before) as we're taxiing to the gate. If you're on Delta (possibly other airlines too), their Gogo inflight wifi includes free access for the app/Delta.com, so you should even be able to check while you're in the air.

I've even used flightaware.com to check the day or so before (If I'm flying on Friday, I'll look at gate assignments for M, T, W, Th flights). There will be minor variations, but that will give me an idea also.

You mention your MiL. As I said earlier, mobility issues can affect things. If she needs a wheelchair to get on/off the plane, I think she's then automatically last to deplane.
