I saw these advertised on MSN today. Back in the old days (20+ years ago) we called them brown and they certainly weren't desirable. But looking at some of them today, I would wear a few of the pieces. I think the ring is my favorite, if it were a 1/2 carat total I'd love it.

The ring is ok. I don't care for them that much. I prefer my diamonds big and as gifts and my chocolate edible! :thumbsup2

I have a few pieces of smoky quartz (very inexpensive) that have a similar look.
I think it is interesting how marketing effects things.
Chocolate seems to be a hot phrase right now.
(cell phones ect...)
Did you know that Chilean Sea bass was very unpopular until it got a marketing firm? It used to be call something dull -like long fish or something and no one wanted it until they renamed it
I wonder if chocolate diamonds will sell better than
brown diamonds
:)

Very true. When I saw this thread I decided to do some googling and learn about said "chocolate" Diamonds. Apparently they are just low quality and chocolate sounds better than Brown. I still think the ring is very pretty, I just wouldn't pay too much for it.

It's because DeBeers has a glut of them and needs to get rid of them.

Same reason why 20+ years ago, BIG diamonds were all the rage. Then, DeBeers had a glut of smaller diamonds, so you got a lot of marketing pushing tennis bracelets, and the similar necklaces (don't know what they're called).

Then, you had those "anniversary rings" with a lot of the even smaller "chip" type diamonds were wrapped around the ring, or included around a larger stone in the middle. Guess what... at that time DeBeers had a glut of those diamonds.

I HIGHLY, STRONGLY, SERIOUSLY suggest reading John Stossel's book, "Myths, Lies, & Downright Stupidity." As a matter of fact, just read pages 150-153. It's EYE OPENING!:scared1:

I'm not a huge fan of "chocolate diamonds" but then again I am not fond of white diamonds either. I really love the canary yellow diamonds as well as black diamonds though.

I wish I could remember where I read this, so I could cite the evidence. But I can't so take this as a maybe true statement that someone you don't know posted on the internet....;)

The reason there are so many "chocolate" and "black" diamonds in jewelry today is that these were once industrial grade diamonds. They were used for cutting tools and phonograph needles. We now use lasers for many of the jobs these diamonds were once used for. So we get "chocolate" and "black" diamonds touted as the "hot" thing for jewelry. They are really more or less industrial grade stones.

OK, here is a link to a statement (go about half-way down the page): http://www.diamondvues.com/2007/08/

"Cognac" "Chocolate" "Champagne" Diamonds. What Are They?

It's funny how until very recently, diamonds of considerably lower colors with brownish hues and yellowish overtones, were simply known as "low color diamonds".

Lower colored diamonds, are not as scarce or valuable as diamonds of icy white colors and therefore command less of a premium than the diamonds of higher (better) color grades.

Problem was, certain diamond mines tended to only produce diamonds of substantially lower colors. Well these are diamonds too and they needed to be sold..right? Well, of course!

Some brilliant marketing guru came up with an incredible idea; why not market these diamonds with finesse! Indeed, why not turn the very liability of the stone into something positive?

Thus, was born the marketing strategy known as "chocolate diamonds," "cognac diamonds," and/or "champagne diamonds".

You turn the negative into a positive......."

I'm not that into diamonds, but Jewelry Television has some very nice "champagne" pieces.

I don't find them unattractive, but I would not automatically think - wow, that's a chocolate diamond. I'd be more inclined to think - brown quartz or ugly garnet [garnet is my birthstone and I have seen a wide range of color in them].

I am so over diamonds. Yes I wear some, but I don't want any more.

I don't like the ring as much as the necklaces.

I think the colors are pretty. But then, I've never been into pure white diamonds much. Simply because there is no color to them.

I am not a fan. As my spouse works in the industry I can say that what all the Stossel thinks he knows is not so true.

The chocolates are not for me. But I am very into the new enamaled/diamond stuff that will be here shortly. (In Japan right now)
Debeers can try to push something all they want but unless it sells it ain't going anyplace. How many of you bought a right hand ring?? They pushed that big time- at a big show the diamond industry had you would have thought Spielberg directed the right hand ring movie they showed. But guess what? BIG BUST!

Personally I'll take my diamonds white tyvm. But I do love the pink saphires.

I was just going to post the same thing- I'll never see diamonds the same way again, or pay a crazy price for them!

Dang an educational thread on the CB. I could lose my DIS license for this!

Seriously, I appreciate you all sharing your knowledge.

I don't like colored diamonds at all.

I do however like LARGE round stones that sparkle a lot!:cool1:
