Chlorinating a small family pool

I have one of those blow up rectangular family pools that my kids and their friends splash around in. My daughter has developed swimmer's ear from being in the untreated water. I do empty out the water after we use it so they don't go in water that's been left for days, however there is still bacteria. Anyone have tips for chlorinating a small pool like this?

You can get a floating thing that holds the chlorine tablets. They sell them @ Walmart, Kmart, Target, etc. The thing that actually hold the chlorine is cheap (under $5). The Chlorine runs about $30 for a bottle of tablets that will last all summer. And grab a box of test strips to keep the water/chemical levels ideal.

You may have to "move/stir" the water on days your not in the pool. Our pool is one of the easy up pools that have a small filter which circulates the water.

The floating device and tabs are great, but they are slow release of chlorine that is really for filtered above ground pools. I would see if you can find either liquid chlorine or I've seen sanitizer for small pools at Target in the pool isle. Get the test strips to measure the amount of chlorine you need/ added afterwards! Too much chlorine in a pool is as dangerous as none! Check the instructions on the bottle and prepare the amount per gallons of water that are in your pool. Enjoy and be safe

Swimmer's ear can happen after a properly chlorinated pool also - it has nothing to do with that. Swimmer's ear is as a result of leftover water in your ear - with or without chlorine. I recommend swimmer's ear drops (basically alcohol) after swimming. I remember having it as a kid and my kids occasionally get it...

This. Swimmer's ear can happen in chlorinated pools as well. I was on a swim team as a kid and had it a lot as a result. We would always use a homemade solution of vinegar/alcohol in the ears every time I got out of the pool to dry up the water. That helped a lot. You can find the recipe online.

I have the same kind of pool. We use a floating chlorine dispenser and put a 1 inch tablet every week or so. We also put a cap full of liquid algecide to keep the bottom and sides from getting slimey. I use a skimmer/vaccuum to keep the debris manageable. It was like 20 bucks from Walmart. Tried to get you a link but the walmart search is down right now - anyway you connect the vaccuum to the hose. Every few weeks we empty it out and scrub it down just to be safe. We also use a cover when its not in use but sometimes when it rains, the cover will collect a lot of dirty water and bugs and when we take the cover off it goes RIGHT in the pool water, so its not that effective.

A low tech way to get water out of your ears is to turn each ear one at a time toward the ground by tilting your head and bending sideways so that your ear is parallel to the ground. Hop or bounce a little if needed and you'll feel the water come running out. This was something my mother taught me to do after swimming and taking baths and it works well.
