Can a chiropractor request an MRI or does that have to be done through your family doctor? We use both for our health care but I have no idea who to go to to request and MRI - anyone know?

I think with my insurance, a chiropractor can "suggest" an MRI but I still have to go to my regular doctor to get the OK for one.

It really depends on your insurance. My insurance doesnt care either way. I can refer myself if I wish. Not sure what the people at the MRI place would say, since I would have no clue what to ask for :rotfl2:

My chiropractor told me that he does refer people out for MRIs when he feels it is warranted. So he can do it; however, what your insurance will accept is another matter. My insurance would be okay with it.

check with insurance-with mine i can self refer to the chiropractor but only my primary care physician or certain specialists he has referred me to can order tests (and sometimes the specialist has to order the test through my medical groups contracted providers vs. whomever they regularly use).

The answer is, it depends on what your state allows. Check with the medical licensing board, they can tell you.

You didn't ask whether chiropractic has any scientific basis whatsoever, so I won't say anything about that. Just, please, be very careful with your family's health.

Who's going to read the MRI?

I would think the same person who would read it no matter who ordered it... the radiologist at the MRI center. :confused3

Some docs never even request copies of the films, they just get the written report from the MRI center.

I believe surgeons will get the MRI films. My dd had a bone spur removed a week ago today and the surgeon showed us how she used the films to map the surgery so she would miss tendons and such.

When my GP ordered an MRI of my spine and pelvis, he never even wanted the films. Just relied on the report read by the radiology doctor.

My friend had an MRI of the head (specifially for his sinus area) and the ENT wanted the films.

My son's knees have been bothering him. We already know he has Osgoode Schlatters Disease but he says the pain is "different" so we think it's time to move on to the next step and request an MRI - I was just wondering since the chiropractor diagnosed and confirmed the Osgoode Schlatters, if she would be able to request the MRI based on her examinations or if I would have to go to the GP to start the process.

I guess I'll have to check with my insurance to see who can order it then. Being in Canada I guess it might be a provincial thing.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah, family physicians do what we do best - and we let a Radiologist look at the films. Why the heck would we want the films if the radiologist is going to look at them and give us a report that we'd not be able to come up with ourselves? haha, that's like asking a cardiologist to do an echo and then saying that we'll interpret it!!!!!! Hmm, where's the logic!
