I bent over while picking up after kids and my back went out. That was Monday.......still hurting today so I decided to call a chiropractor. The one I used to see (5 years ago) has left town, so I had to find a new one.

I called one that uses "activator methods" and was wondering if anyone had any input on this.

They said they dont take xrays so how do they know what is wrong with my back???

Thanks

Angel

Never heard of that, sorry... all the ones I know do take x-rays and unless they have a new way of looking at the spine I am not sure I would trust someone who didn't.

Not taking x-rays isn't all that uncommon. My Dad didn't take x-rays all the time and my chiropractor doesn't, I haven't had spinal x-rays in more than a decade. They are trained to feel for problems with the spine, if they think something is off or that there is problem they're not getting they will send you out for x-rays.

I personally love the activator method, it works well and puts less pressure and force on the bones than traditional adjustments.

An activator is a small tool that kind of thumps you and gently
puts things back in place. My chiro uses it on me occassionally
and almost always on DS-he's a maniac with his body!
Most chiros combine activator with manual adjustments these
days. Xrays are usually not needed as most chiropractors can
feel what they need to with their hands. Most would send you
for xrays if they thought it prudent. Don't worry.

My fiancee regularly goes to a chiropractor as well (nicest guy in the whole world, doesn't even charge my fiancee until he feels that he has helped him in some small way....my fiancee generally pays once every ten visits or so...crazy!). Anyway, my fiancee has never had x-rays done there either...like other people have said, they do it all by feel. He says that he can feel MUCH more with just his hands than an X-ray can show.

My DH is a Chiropractor. He always does X-rays when there is a new patient. Yes, he can feel what is out, but there may be some underlying problem that can be detected by an x-ray. It may be something that a Medical Doctor should look at and then the Chiropractor would suggest you see your MD. I would not got to a Chiropractor who does not do x-rays.

Some Chirorpactors are activator only (no manual adjustments.) DH feels that you get better results with manual adjustments. He does have a few patients who prefer activator, but they are mainly elderly.

If it was me I would not go to this Doctor. I'm not saying he is not good for some people, he just doesn't fit my criteria. :) JMHO.

I agree with Jenn Lynn's dh's philosophy. I went to a chiropractor when I thought I was having psiatic nerve problems. Turned out I had a bone cyst in my hip. He actually broke the shell of bone that was left. If he'd done x-rays he wouldn't have touched me.
I'm sure that you just wrenched your back but I think it's better to be safe than sorry.
JMO.:D

I'll never go to another one! A few months back when I hurt my back I was going to a Chiro....he twisted and bent, used electric shock therapy, took x-rays and the whole 9 yards. He made it worse.....X-rays only show BONE...they can't tell if there is tissue damage. When I finally got in to see an orthopedic he asked me if I had a broken arm would I want someone twisting and pulling on it?? So he wasn't too keen on the chiro guys.....Turns out no chiro could have treated me or even diagnosed me. It was tissue and nerve damage......

If you think you are hurt.....get an MRI......and don't wait like I did...
