China Trip Questions

We're doing the China ABD in Sept 2026 and I want to make sure my thought process is correct for anyone that has gone before.

With the luggage weight limitations, I'm guessing those don't apply until we take our first flight within China, that bags won't be weighed on the train from Hong Kong?

Also, has anyone shipped stuff home from HK or the next hotel? Was it easy?

Trips this long I take clothes I'm happy to leave behind to help with weight but with a stop in Tokyo before HK I know we'll add a little bit of weight. Just trying to sort out options and find a lightweight carryon.

Also with the carry on at 11lb, is a personal item of a reg one pocket jansport backpack ok to use? It'll easily fit under a seat and isnt an obnoxiously huge backpack.

We just got back from this ABD. It is awesome but probably one of the fastest pace ABDs ( our 7th). Internal flight legs they are NOT at all strict on weight limits like some countries like Australia. If anything our carry on ended up being very heavy because China prohibited anything with significant metal from being packed in our checked bags like umbrellas. Also, not a single person was fined for checked bags over weight and many people on this adventure travel to other countries prior or after the ABD to China.

We spent way too much time worrying about weight after our trip to Australia however, I can only relay my most recent experience. No issue at all over carry on weight or checked bag weight. They will find any lithium battery, lighter, or any thing with decent metal like a hair iron or straightener and investigate it if it is in a checked bag though.

It is a wonderful trip and my opinion of China dramatically changed for the positive after our wonderful trip.

That's great to know. I'll also make a note to put my flat iron and umbrella in my carry on. I already keep anything with the batteries on my carry on.

I'm still going to get a lighter bag to use but I won't stress as much.

Did you fly the same airline for all of the flights?
