well we are leaving in like 2 weeks for disneyland and was wondering if someone could give me the heads up on which places allow you to buy off the childrens menu...My mom and I are both dieting(doing very well) and dont want to ruin our groove by over eating which is wayyyy too easy to do when your on vacation...TIA:banana:

i'm guessing just about any restaurant will let you order off the childs menu except for the full service restaurants that is. there you might come across a problem but any other place you won't have a problem.

Good for you planning ahead!

I think any counter service would...BUT, the kids choices tend to be fried chicken nuggets and mac n cheese meals etc..

Perhaps you can share a salad with your mom? They're HUGE and no one will care if you share. Or share an entree? There's plenty of veggie soups (skip the bread bowl, trust me!) and grilled fish and chicken at most places. Check out some menus ahead of time if they're available on line (no idea). Good Luck!!!!!

I like to eat off the kids menu too b/c I end up wasting a lot if I order a regular meal. :(

Before my solo trip I was part of a longish thread about this. People reported ordering from kid's menu all over.

When i was there I only had two kid's meals, and they were:

The bean and cheese burrito meal at Rancho del Zocalo. I decided I wanted a soda, so when I paid I asked to sub that, they gave me a little cup and I got the soda. It's amazing how filling a little meal like that is, especially such a small cup of soda, compared to getting a huge platter!

At Plaza Inn I got their pasta with marinara. Also got a side salad, and this time just got the little water that comes with the meal. Perfect!

The big benefit to those was that they come on the plastic Mickey plate, so I wiped those off and put them in my backpack. Voila! Instant souvenirs for my 3 year old at home. :) (I'm not the only one that reports that their kid will eat all sorts of otherwise-untouched food from those plates)

As someone else mentioned...a lot of the kids menu stuff tends to be mac and cheese or chicken nuggets. However at some places you can get pasta with marinera (I've done that one before. and I've done the kids meal chicken fingers too.)

As far as healthy goes...I would do what others suggested and share meals at the counter service places. Then you can get actual chicken (instead of nuggets) or salads and stuff like that. Pizza Port has a few great salad choices an they are big enough to share. Same goes for their pasta dishes. And quite a few places in the park have delicious soups.

I actually find that MOST kids meals in general (haven't done DL while looking for kids meals yet) are not all that healthy, although I do appreciate that it looks like kid sides at DL are fruit or veggies. In reality, though, I've found that having my DD share my meal with me (or all 3 of us sharing if it's a really big meal!) is the healthiest option. Seriously though, it's a little off-topic, but why do so many places only offer chicken nuggets, grilled cheese, mac & cheese, and burgers for kids? I'm finding it frustrating. I know, no need to vent that here... sorry! :)

We share and always have enough food. Enjoy your trip and the wonderful soups and salads at DL!!

Our little foodie gets around this by ordering an appetizer of the regular menu instead of a kiddie meal. It works at a lot of places. (If we eat at Outback he can have the "add on" crab legs since I'm ordering an entree.) It's maybe a couple dollars more but totally worth it for him to eat proper food.

I agree. The kid's pasta dish at the Trattoria that my 8 y/o got was a nice sized entree (especially for lunch).

& the kid's Mickey Waffles entree at Carnation was also too big for him. (hating to see waste, i was forced to help him finish it. :rolleyes1 )

I find most of the food (Counter service specifically) at DL and other theme parks to be not all that healthy. But at least with the kids meals you are getting a smaller portion of the not so healthy food. But I did find that the French Market in New Orleans Sq. offers a grilled chicken breast as one the kids meals.

Thank you all so much for your advice, i think we will definatly just split normal meals...but now i dont even want my 6 yr old eating the junk they offer to the kids....thank goodness DS2 is still breastfed, dont have to worry about that...

I know it! I don't get why it's so hard to offer non-greasy/fried foods with a good side of veggies or fruit for kids. DD will still be sharing food with us when we go, so that's what we'll do for now. I don't mind occasional bad stuff (I'm really NOT a crazy health-food girl ;)), but I just don't understand why so many restaurants only offer the same options for kids - they (hopefully) eat healthy at home, so why should that not be the case at a restaurant?
