The other day I was talking to my daughter and she started talking about our most recent trip. She listed everything as she remembered it.
We went to the castle.
We saw fireworks.
I spun with Tiana.
We flew Dumbo.

And the best for last.....

WE RODE A BUS!!

I cracked up laughing. What was your kids simplest memory that could have been made a lot cheaper outside of Disney?

Well, I could have saved myself a lot of money when I took my nephew for his 5th birthday - his favorite ride was the monorail. I could have foregone the park tickets and ridden the monorail all day and he would have still thought Disney World was the coolest place on earth!

My boys still talk about the flights from our trip to Disneyland. Granted, there were close to 40 hours spent flying, but still!!!!

I feel your pain! WE took the little girls I care for last August. We carefully chose the Grand for them so they could see the Castle, and to dance to the lovely piano music in the Grand "Ballroom". No matter the travel options available, they wanted the "limo" AKA the monorail. WE could have packed a picnic and ridden that monorail all day long every day we were there and they woudl have been as happy as two clams.

My first trip was in May of 1982 when I was 6 years old. The thing I remember most from that trip is that my mom let us have pizza for breakfast one morning--must have been a late breakfast. It was so out of the ordinary for her to allow that, but it was the first food they found once we were inside Magic Kingdom. Needless to say, my brother and I were thrilled.

Some of my daughters' (3 and 9) memories they just keep talking about:

Riding the bus
Playing at the playground
Eating ice cream
Eating cotton candy
Watching Disney Channel
Sleeping with Grandma

All of which could be accomplished by a day at school followed by a free trip to Grandma's.

Yes, I asked for favorite things about Disney to put on the last page of our photobook last year and the bus rides were DS2's favorite. He was also mad that we never went on the ferry. His only exposure to it was walking past it at its dock on the way in to MK. It's like the cardboard box at Christmas. :D

I hear this from parents every time I'm at the splash area at Storybook Circus or the Dinoland playground "I didn't spend all this money for you to play in a playground" or "You can get wet at home with our hose"

The pool. Definitely the pool, which we have access to all summer long in our neighborhood. LOL Now, the pool at Bay Lake does have the awesome slide, so that's why my daughter has such great memories of it as she got older.

The pillow fight we had in our hotel room the first morning of our trip. Seriously my 5 year old told everyone about it when we got home...not Disney attractions, or even the beach or the dolphins.

My kids were 5 when we took them the first time and we are going back this summer in which they will be 9. So I was asking them about what they remember and these are the things:
1. Meeting Rapunzel
2. Bippity Boppity Boutique
3. Pirates of the Carribean
4. Soar'n
5. When it rained really hard at Animal Kingdom and we got soaking wet
6. The "Princesses" bringing them presents each night (they asked me if I called the Princesses to make sure they could do this again when we go in July. I said of course I did). I think it's funny because they know they aren't real and that it's their dad and I but they totally will play into it so they get something everyday.

When DD was age 2 - 5 all she cared about was the hotel no matter where we went or what we did. She wanted to build pillow/blanket forts and bounce on the bed.

LOL - it's like that for big kids too. I went to Disney with my family when my sister & I were in college. My favorite memory? Going down to the pool bar with my sister and having a drink after our parents went to bed. Something I could have done at any bar in any city. :)

I took my son at 4 with his cousins and then again for his 5th birthday with his best friend.

He enjoyed himself so much on both trips but at those young ages the memories didn't last. In fact, by the time he was 10 he didn't remember the trips at all.

Yes, I could have saved alot of money not going on to Disney but I'm still glad we went because those memories were for me.

He's 14 now and DD12 and up until two years ago all they really ever needed was a pool to make them happy on vacay. It didn't need to be a fancy pool either.

I would always say to DH we should have driven 10 minutes from our house and stayed a night or two at the embassy suites their fav hotel chain. It not only had a pool but they could get their own snacks and breakfast and it had two seperate rooms.

Boy they were easy to please too bad I wasn't.

Hahaha too funny- DS4 is obsessed with the monorail... It's his absolute favorite thing at Disney. He could ride it all day.

At least when I ask DD what her favorite thing at Disney is, she says a ride- small world.

I was 4 the first time I went to WDW (80s) and the ONLY thing I remember is my cousin screaming "Mickey Mouse don't eat me" when we met Mickey.

Daughter doesn't list it herself, but her first trip at age 3 was largely spent watching all the birds and ducks who come close looking for snack scraps. We have more pictutres of her with birds that trip than with characters!

Otherwise they always mention swimming at night - we have pools at home, bug we don't go at night.

They really enjoy the travel part and listing all the cars, shuttles, plane, buses, monorails, boats we took to get around.

Last - the time the skies opened up just as Fantasmic ended and we had to struggle to stay together as daughter and niece shared a poncho and stomped through the puddles!

My son loved this our first trip as well! We live within walking distance to school and there are no public busses here so it was thrilling.

Also the Taxi ride from the airport to our hotel after the flight home. (the shuttle was busy so they sent us in a taxi) He had never driven in a taxi before and thought it was awesome. (No booster seat seemed so thrilling)

Kids are funny. Now that he is 10 he prefers if we have a car and drive ourselves to the parks.

Fireworks (Fantasmic)
Dragon (Fantasmic)
Pink Donut (Universal)

DS's recollection of his first trip to Disney at 2 years old. The only other vacation he remembers outside of Disney(he's 4 now) is the "Strawberry hotel" which had some massive strawberries on the breakfast buffet. While we could do cheaper vacations, I'm not sure they would have the same impact memory wise. We did a week on the Florida beaches last year and I don't think he ever talks about it.

"We danced at the restaurant!!"!(Biergarten) ... Her favourite

Also the water "fountain" that shoots out of the ground at Marketplace...she played in those for a good hour one night. She got absolutely drenched but it was probably her (and our) favourite memory of the whole trip.
