Child's information in case of getting lost -- where, how?

We sat next to a mom and her two children (she was traveling alone with them) on the monorail on Earth Day. The boy about 8 and the little girl about 6. She was discussing with them what they should do if they get lost, and asked the boy if he knew her cell phone, he did and repeated it. Next she took out her pen and WROTE the cell phone number on the little girls palm - hey - easy to find, can't get lost - I thought a pretty fool proof idea. The little girl pipes up - Mommy - I can't wash my hands (very hygenic child!), and Mommy replied that if it should come off while she is washing her hands, they will write it again.

So there is a simple idea - a little ink on the little hand never hurt anyone - that is free, and in my opinion pretty fail safe. She also asked the little boy if he would prefer to have it written on his had too, in case he got lost and was nervous and couldn't think!

Of course she also made sure that they knew to go to a CM.

We also do the laminated card. I do not put it in their pocket but I pin it in their clothing. It may be a risk that someone can learn their name, but it is a bigger risk if they are lost. I also start out each day by introducing my daughter to a CM. I explain that all CMs have different "costumes" on but all have nametags. I tell her if she gets lost--look for the cast member. Even yell out Cast Member help me! The other thing that has worked well has been a whistle. Fear not--they get tired of playing with the whistle really quickly. Especially when they KNOW that if they whistle unnecessarily they forfeit a ride. The wear the whistle and if they look up and do not see me they are to blow it. Usually when they are lost they aren't far. They are within hearing range. My son got lost once when he was six and he blew the whistle. I walked around the corner and it led me right to hiim!

What super ideas! I wish I hadn't thought of this so late -- I would definitely order those ID Inside wristbands. My kids both have velcro shoes, so I can't do anything with shoelaces. I'm afraid pinning something on the inside of her/his collar would bug them -- and someone wrote that Disney CMs are not allowed to remove a child's clothing to get at the information (a good rule, I must say!) -- but would they be allowed to look inside the collar then?

What if I put a piece of paper with that information on it on the inside of her shoe like someone suggested? Would they be able to take her shoe off to get to it or is that considered clothing?

What sort of ID wristbands is everyone referring to? Do you have a link I can see? I would love to get one for DD.

As for removing clothing to look for ID.....does this include looking in their pockets?

This is something I've been thnking about, too, so thanks to the OP and to all those who had such great advice.

When going someplace crowded, I usually write our info on an index card, seal it in a ziplock baggie, and then safety-pin it to their pocket. But, I love the dog-tag idea and the thing that attached to their shoes, so I'll check into them!

Thanks!!! I just ordered the Vital ID bracelt last night. I emailed them and told them we were leaving for vacation soon.....so they mailed it out today!!! What great customer service!!

We ordered "ID on Me" for my DS(7) and DD(4) - they come in all different colors, with vital information only or as medical ID tags. My husband is a police officer and does not allow me to put anything on the children displaying their name for fear they will trust a "stranger" that calls them by name. He's seen this happen all too often where he works. The ID bracelets are wonderful because the parent fills out the information and it is enclosed in a water-resistent bracelet that can be worn around the wrist, ankle, or on the shoe laces. I plan on just telling my kids to look for a CM if lost and show their bracelets!!!

How does it fit your 4 y/o? I have seen these and wanted to order for all three children, but I didn't know how it would fit the two little ones. They are 4 & 2. They are both pretty small for the age also. We encountered a lost little girl on our last trip, and although I had thought of doing it before, after that I decided to definitely do it for this trip. Even thought my will be 10 y/o probably knows our cell phone #'s by heart, I wanted to do it for her just in case she were to get lost. The panic may make her forget things that she would otherwise know. better safe than sorry, right?

This is my first trip to WDW with kids. I have created a business size card with my kids info and placed it in a waterproof lanyard. I found the clear pouch with a ziploc like closure they can wear around their necks (inside clothing) at Wal-Mar for 97 cents. They know that if they get lost, all they have to do is take the pouch out of their shirts and show it to a CM. I'm hoping this works
