Hello, all! Anyone out there with magazine recommendations for a rising 2nd grader? I want my DD to begin getting a mag. in the mail. She's pretty much "girly-girl" and would lean more towards a magazine that is appealing in that way. I'd love for her to get one dedicated to animals or something, but I'd be wasting my money. Anyone with a favorite? Thanks a bunch! :thumbsup2

How about American Girl? I got those up until I was about 12. They always had a lot of variety in them too, from advice to animals, to girly hairstyles, etc. Lots of fun!

We get Ranger Rick for my dd, she's 6 and reads it cover to cover.

My kids like Nickelodean.

Lori P. :)

I would say american girl. Im a teen and i still get it! what i like is that it is about fun stuff that girls-preteen girls need. like craft ideas and advice, not how to get the boys to look at you.

I think that American Girl would be a great one. I know that when I was that age I loved that magazine.

I also recommend American Girl magazine! I think the subscription is a little higher than other magazines, but it contains no advertising.

I love Cricket Magazine myself, even though I'm far too old for the target age group! I started reading it as a young girl, and I've just kept going. I think Spider magazine is for the younger ages and might fit your 2nd grader. The Cricket magazine series (BabyBug, LadyBug, Spider, Cricket, and Cicada) are literary magazines for kids and by kids (the older ones). They have short stories, poems, artwork, activities, non-fiction, comics, etc. I think it works great for all kinds of kids - including the "girly-girls" (I was a little bit of one myself).

There's also a science magazine by the Cricket publishers called Muse that is like a Jr. version of Smithsonian. I know a lot of kids that love Muse - including several "girly-girls".

Highlights is a good standby.

If your daughter in Girl Scouts they have a magazine just for GS called Girl's Life. Both my daughters read it cover to cover.

My DD is a rising 2nd grader and get the Disney Princess magazine and loves it.

DD loves American Girl. You don't have to be a Girl Scout to get Girl's Life, another one my DD loves. They also like the Nickelodeon magazines, Children's Digest and Disney Adventures. Their favorite magazine WAS Discovery Kids, but that has been discontinued.

Well, my kids liked Nickelodeon, but that's not really girly. How about the Disney Adventures?

There used to be one called World or something like that that I got as a kid. It was put out by National Geographic and would be right up your alley because it's all about animals and the world etc...Cool magazine but I don't know if they still make it or not.And again it's not girly. Sorry. I have boys and was not too girly myself so.....

Does she like sports? They have the SI for Kids magazine......sorry, not girly....guess I'll let someone more girly than me reply from now on :wave2:

DD loves Disney Adventures. I got her one subscription to American Girl thinking she would love it but she rarely read it so I didn't renew. But DA she reads cover to cover and even saves them. :confused3

Try to borrow an old issue or pick one up at a newstand of ones you might think she will like then let her decide. Its better than spending $ on one that she doesn't care for.

When I was a kid I loved Disney Adventures. :) Actually still do..when like Jesse McCartney is on the cover I put it on the convaryer belt at the store then when we get home my mom is all "Why do we have this? I do not remember buying this" then I respond "Oops.. Didn't I tell you? I guess it is a surprise to you..but wait actually it is not for you it is mine" Then I run off to my room lol :)

Some other magazines

National Geographics for Kids

I also vote for American Girl. My DD7 somehow got one issue in the mail back in March (weird because we never ordered it, yet it had her name on it & just the one came, huh.) and she still reads & re-reads it. Like another poster said, it's not full of how-to-flirt or how-to-look-hot articles, but full of useful, interesting, funny things that girls from age 5 or 6 all the way up to teens would like. I've even been known to pick it up from time to time!

I used to get American Girl when I was younger and I always loved it. Maybe you could also try one called Discovery Girls. My sister got that a couple times and there was nothing offensive about it.

I would recommend American Girl. My DD got that until she "grew out of it." Very good magazine! :)

As a children's librarian I highly recommend getting a few out from your local library first to judge her interest. Some girls rave about American girl, some hate it. But I bet she'll love it.

I would still go to the library, you might be surprised with what she likes.

Discovery Girls is another one along the lines of American Girl. I always loved Highlights as a kid. It's one of the library's most popular ones.

Stay away from Girl's Life. It's for older girls.

I like American Girl because it prints all shapes and sizes where Girl's life can get very mainstream, meaning skinny; and who wants to start that with a 7 year old? (or an any-year old for that matter :) GL also focuses too much on stars instead of young girls in general.

I wanted to add that you can read reviews on Amazon about all the different magazines we're discussing! And more too! :)
