Children's Bonine - Discontinued????

I'm hoping someone can confirm or refute this.

I went to my local drugstore tonight to pick up some Children's Bonine to try out with my DD's before cruising. I will feel better if I give them something for the first time while we are at home to make sure they tolerate it ok.

I wasn't able to find Children's Bonine or Children's Dramamine on the shelf, and when I asked the person working at the pharmacy counter, they told me both had been discontinued and my only option for sea-sickness in children was sea bands.

Is this true? I didn't have time to go anywhere else to look tonight and when I looked it up online, it looked as if there were places for me to purchase online, but I'm a little leery of purchasing drugs online.

I also asked my ped about sea-sickness in children and he said that children do not usually get sea-sick, but if they did I could give them either Dramamine or Bonine. He didn't say anything about them being discontinued. He did say that alternately I could use Benadryl, as that would have the same effect. :confused3

Has anyone ever had success with Benadryl for motion sickness? I've never heard that, but thought someone with more cruising experience might know.

Thanks!

A few months ago I picked some up from behind the pharmacy counter at Target. You can still buy it online.

We were on CCL last October and our doctor said DD2 should be fine (and she was) but I could take something for her just in case. I went to the Target pharmacy and they gave me "SunMark anti-nausea liquid." Active ingredients: Dextrose (glucose) 1.87g, Levulose (frutose) 1.87g, Phosphoric acid 21.5mg

Luckily we never needed it but I took it along just in case.

I actually found it at Publix on the way to the port a few weeks ago. But it was on clearance so it may be discontinued. I bought some just in case but my boys said it tasted horrible!

Regular Dramamine has a children's dosage listed on the package. It is a pill though, not a chewable. Since they needed 1/4 - 1/2, we were able to put it in ice cream to get them to swallow it. Children's Dramamine is not recommended for under age 6 so it didn't work for us.

Your best bet is to talk to your doctor. He/she may be able to give you a prescription option that may work better (Zofran is a good anti-nausea) or give you another option. Most likely, unless your child is prone to motion sickness, you will be fine.

I was just looking and couldn't find it either, and nothing on the Bonine website about it. I was thinking of just giving my kids half a tablet of the regular strength.

Childrens bonine didn't work for my DD, so I'm not disappointed if it got discontinued.
Regular Dramamine does have dosing for kids as young as 2...and there is a chewable form as well as the pills. If you can't find the chewable, the regular that you have to swallow are very small and easy to hide in food. As a PP said, putting in ice cream works. Yogurt or pudding are good options too.

I was at my local Publix yesterday (Tampa) and as I was perusing the clearance rack, I saw it there. That usually means it's discontinued, they are changing the packaging, or the store isn't carrying it anymore.

I was worried when my DD went on her 1st cruise when she was 2 1/2, and I bought some kids Sea Bands to take along. They are still unopened in the package - we've never needed them. :goodvibes She's now 5 and headed on her 5th cruise (boarding the Fantasy in 10 days!!!).

Good luck!!!

Benedryl works great for motion sickness for my DD. She gets terribly motion sick in the car and has since she was about 2. The Dr recommended benedryl for her. It is actually the exact same active ingrediants as Dramamine but has the benefit of being available in liquid form.

I have bought it at Walgreens last February. I had to have them special order it in. They had it the next day.

Sounds like I'd better go ahead and order the Bonine for Children from Amazon "just in case". Benadryl hypes my children up like no tomorrow--it is insane!!

I bought it a few weeks ago at Shop Rite. I also saw it at Wegmans just yesterday while I was looking for something else. Maybe they are able to sell it until it sells out?

When my daughter was younger her pediatrician said I could give her half the adult dose of Bonine, and it worked great! I myself cant take Dramamine, I cant stay awake and luckily the first time I took it my sister was on vacation with us :rotfl2: as I couldnt even take my daughter to the bathroom!
She has been taking it every time we fly or cruise and has never had a problem.
This past May we went with 3 other children ages 6, 9 and 11 who all took half the adult dose and they all did great! Good thing because on the flight down one of the boys who was 9 vomited on the smooth plane ride  I hate to see how he would have done one the rocky seas:rolleyes1
Good luck, and just ask the pediatrician as half the adult dose may be ok. They were easy to break in half and chewable ;)

Benadryl knocks my DD out, so that would never work for us. She wouldn't feel sick, I guess, but she wouldn't be able to participate in anything either, lol.

She is now 9, going on 10, and her pediatrician gave the OK to half a regular Bonine years ago. (I can't remember exactly how long ago it was, but I'm thinking 2-3 years ago.) It works like a charm, and since my DSs and I take it too, I only have to buy/carry one type. :thumbsup2

I hope they don't discontinue it. It works well for my kids. I just ordered more online just in case.

Dramamine is Dimenhydrinate.
Benedryl is Diphenhydramine.

They are both antihistamines, but they are different drugs with different chemical structures. Both can cause drowsiness.
