Trip Report – Day 6 – July 30, 2005

Cast:
Me 31
DH 35
DS 2
DD 1
My parents (I’ll refer to as M&D for Mom and Dad)
My grandmother (MM for MomMom – that’s what my kids call her)
My aunt (AK for Aunt Karen)
My in-laws (ILS)

Well I can give today’s report a couple of titles, but I’m going with this one:
“Would you like some jam with your sconce?” (No, that isn’t a typo!)

This morning I was aiming for a repeat of day 2, when I went to MK before the opening ceremony began so that my mom could get to see it. It was a girls’ only morning consisting of DD, mom, my AK and me. MM and my MIL stayed back to get some extra rest, as did the boys. So it should have been an easy morning then, right? Ha!

When I got to the turnstile, I put my AP in, placed my fingers in the scanner and POOF! I was denied! Yes, out of all the things that had happened already, my AP was denied! The CM tried three more times to no avail. So……….instead of getting a great viewing spot in front of the MK train station, I got a nice spot in line at Guest Relations. Now I was really trying not to freak out, but I didn’t have any ID (please refer to day 4 for reference) so I was sure that they’d give me a hard time.

Well, Tink must have flown by to sprinkle some pixie dust on me (finally!) and I got the nicest CM who simply had me verify my home address. He personally walked me over to the turnstiles and had the CM there reset the scan on my AP. I did miss part of the ceremony, but my mom and AK got to see it, so that’s all I cared about.

Whew!

Now we were back inside my favorite park of all and it was just the girls and I, which was a very nice way to start the day. Miss Erika was whisked to the barbershop first thing. Now she really didn’t need a haircut, I just wanted to get her bangs trimmed. They were getting a bit long and wild, so we went to see if they’d do a trim. Well, Michal was there and he said he would just “shape it up a bit.” Now Michal is the barber that gave my son his first haircut back in August 2003, so I was more than tickled pink that I was repeating a tradition! I’m a sucker for tradition!

So as her brother before her, Erika was placed in the seat and given some Mickey stickers to distract her. She is a bit more finicky than her brother ever was, so Michal had to use some of his best tricks to keep DD from pushing him away or worse, grabbing the scissors.

Michal managed just fine and shaped up my little princess’ hair quite nicely. We got the official Disney “First Haircut” certificate complete with a lock of her little curls and the Mickey ears that have “My First Haircut” sewn on the back. How cute she looked in that hat…but the hat was on the floor in seconds.

Now since we only went to the MK for the opening show and the haircut, we weren’t fighting crowds to get on any attractions. We stayed on Main Street and headed over to the bakery for some breakfast. I finally got my blueberry muffin. Actually, my mom and I shared the muffin and the fruit and yogurt cup. Both were yummy! AK had the crumb cake, which was very good, too. It was nice sitting outside people watching and having a leisurely breakfast instead of running to Fantasyland to get in line for Pooh! I really enjoyed my morning here.

We left for the Polynesian after that. My grandmother had a hair appointment at the Ivy Trellis in the GF. She gets her hair done every Saturday and I made this appointment for her so her routine wouldn’t be interrupted. So my mom took her to the GF while I rested with DD. We were meeting up with her around 1.45pm to go to tea at the Garden View Lounge. This was also a girls’ only event. The boys were heading over to Fort Wilderness for the afternoon.

AK, DD, MIL and I met up with my mom and grandmom at the GF. We were able to browse the shops for a bit before the lounge opened for tea. I was surprised by the number of people waiting for the lounge to open. This place has a lot of appeal. If you haven’t tried I urge you to. It was wonderful.

Once the lounge opened we were seated promptly. We were given menus to look at and our server explained about the various teas they had. She also described the different offerings on the menu. You can order a la carte or a full tea. My MIL ordered a full tea. The rest of us ordered a la carte. My mom and grandmother shared an order of tea sandwiches and scones. AK and I shared the cheese plate, scones and strawberries. The cheese plate was excellent! Plenty to share! I gave DD some cheese and crackers and some strawberries. She seemed to enjoy all of it. My MIL got the Buckingham Palace tea, which included tea sandwiches, scones and a jam tart and strawberries.

Now here is where the title of today’s trip comes into play.

My MIL isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, if you know what I mean. But today just kind of really drove that concept home. While we were looking at the menus, she referred to the scones as SCONCES. Now I thought I misheard her, so I said, “Oh, you mean the scones?” She replied, “Yes, I really like sconces.” My mom had to turn her head and I just bit my lip….hard. I mean, she didn’t even get that I was trying to correct her. It was pretty funny, and we’re still laughing over it. I do feel like I’m being so mean when we bring it up, but it just seems to creep into conversation. Like last weekend I had picked up some scones for dessert for my son’s birthday party and as soon as my mom saw them, she was caught up in a fit of laughter. I don’t even remember what the waitress did when she ordered her sconce…maybe she didn’t have to ask for it because it came with the Buckingham? Ah well, it was a classic MIL moment, what can I say?
As a surprise for everyone, I ordered 3 Cinderella Slipper Desserts to share. That’s why I ordered a la cart and shared with my aunt. I didn’t want to over do it. Well, when our server brought these out, it caused a bit of a commotion in the lounge. The girls at the table next to us asked how we got them and I told them I ordered them in advance from GF’s private dining. They were all excited and told me they’d be ordering them on their next visit.

Not only are these desserts beautiful, but they taste wonderful, too. We split two of the desserts between AK, my mom, my grandmom, my MIL and me. We boxed the other one. I wanted DH to see one in tact so I took it back to the room. Everyone was surprised and touched that I had gone out of my way to arrange for this special dessert. I was glad I brought smiles to their faces.

Now I have decided that I will be making this tea a tradition for me and DD. I can’t wait until she is old enough to take her to My Disney Princess Perfect Tea (I think that’s what it’s called). I know that is really expensive, but maybe for her 5th birthday I’ll indulge her a bit. (Not only am I big on traditions, I’m big on milestones, too!)

After tea, we took the monorail back to the resort to rest up before our evening. I had another fun event planned for our group: a Grand Gathering Pirate Cruise. I had been looking forward to this for months and was so excited that it was finally here! We were to meet at the Contemporary around 8.15pm, then we would board our “ship” and journey out to sea for a spectacular view of “Wishes.” I couldn’t wait!

We got to the Contemporary early and had to wait a bit before the event started. Once we were allowed into the reception area, we found a beautiful dessert table set up with a large pirate as the centerpiece. It wasn’t until I looked at our pictures that I realized that the pirate was sculpted out of chocolate! How cool!
IMG_1799.jpg

The desserts were pretty good, but I was a bit full from my treats at the tea. I ate a little and had some water. The only think I would critique about this event was the fact that it’s geared towards kids, but they didn’t have any milk available for the little ones. Just soda, water, coffee and tea. I did say something to one of the catering hosts and he looked surprised, kind of as if I turned the light on for him, you know?

About 20 minutes into the reception, the party was “crashed” by Mr. Smee and Captain Hook! DS was so excited to meet Hook and Smee! And Smee just loved DD. He spent almost 15 minutes just playing with her. It was by far, the best character interaction we had out of ALL our Disney trips!

IMG_1811.jpg

Then a band of pirates swooped in and divided us into two groups. Hook’s group and Smee’s group. We were in Mr. Smee’s group and our pirate host was “Patch.” Patch was a great host and he led us to our boat along with Smee. We boarded the boat and were off to sea! We sang some songs, played Disney trivia (DH and I knew all the answers) and watched the Electric Water Pageant. Then we sailed to Seven Seas Lagoon to view Wishes. They piped the music into the boat and our view was of the castle straight in front of us. There is no better way to view Wishes than this, expect maybe in the concierge lounge at the Polynesian. I’ve yet to try that out, so I can’t speak from experience.

As we headed back to shore, Patch told us the story of Peter Pan (my favorite!) and we were met at the dock by none other than Peter, himself. And he had Tinker Bell with him! She was safely in her lantern and I thought that was the coolest thing! Unfortunately, DS was asleep at this point so he missed Peter and Tink, but we still got some pictures of him with Peter Pan.

The cruise was fantastic, but I know I won’t get to do it again. I’m never going to WDW with a large group again! LOL!

We took the monorail from the Contemporary back to the Polynesian and headed for bed. Today was a relaxing day, but also a long day, so we were all tired. A good nights sleep is just what we needed.

Awwww....Things are really looking up for you! :goodvibes Love the story about your MIL and the sconces! :rotfl: Also, loved your Wishes Cruise review. I have really wondered if this was worth the $$$$. Since we are taking my dad next summer (he doesn't know it yet), I would like to do something special like that cruise.

Thank you for sharing your story and your pics too!! I will be sad when your trip is over because I have really enjoyed your stories, but I keep hoping your wallet will turn up! Anyway, thanks again for sharing!! :)

Came home tonight looking forward to reading Day 6! I have so many ideas to put in my journal for our upcoming trip - where do you find out about the cruises? I'm reading so many new things to do at WDW from everyone.

My youngest DS would love the pirate's cruise! pirate:

P.S. Thank you for your reply - I Do have great kids! :grouphug:

heaven2dc,

The pirate cruise is booked through Grand Gatherings. If you have a party of 8 or more, you can book this event. It was $29.99 per person and well worth it in my opinion. It was really a wonderful way to spend an evening outside of the theme parks!

Great report. I have truly enjoyed reading about your experiences. Do you happen to have a picture of the Cinderella Slipper Dessert?

Enjoyed reading your report ~ Thanx for posting.

Keep em coming as I love reading them. I was thinking about the afternoon tea at the GF but with DS (nearly 3 when we go) and DH not sure really up their street.

Tjaleks,

My Aunt took one picture of the slipper dessert, but it didn't come out that great. I didn't have my digital camera with me. DH took it to Fort Wilderness. I wish I had had it, though. Sorry.

Clare D,

I saw several men enjoying the tea. They were dressed very casually, in jeans and polos, actually. And they have a Mrs. Potts tea for the little ones. I think it's pb&j's and chocolate milk. Sounds cute! I don't think they'd be out of place. JMHO.

Anne

Another great day! I'm looking forward to your next day. I hear you met a couple of really interesting characters that day ;)

Karen

Love the report! Can't wait to hear more! I would love to do a cruise like that! Hopefully next year if I can get my parents involved, then my sister will have to bring a friend so we can have 8 lol! Thanks for posting!

Hi Anne
Thanks for the update. Do you have to make a PS for this or can you ask your hotel to try and book for you, we are staying at the AKL?
Clare ::MinnieMo

Clare D,

If you're staying concierge at AKL, then just ask concierge to book the tea for you. Otherwise you call the dining line (407) WDW-DINE and make a PS/ADR just like you would any other restaurant. They lounge opens at 2pm each day, I believe.

Have fun!!!

Anne

PS - When in October will you be there? We're going Sept. 30 - Oct. 4th and we'll be at MNSSHP on Oct. 2nd.

Oh no we just miss each other, we arrive on the 5th - 9th and then we are heading down to Naples. I have managed though to book again for Nov 06 but only 3 days in Orlando before the DCL trip. I wish we lived a bit nearer not 9 hours away by air!
I have called and booked for the Saturday 8th October. We are EPCOT that day so will make our way back to GF and then go back to EPCOT for the fireworks. I have also seen pictures of some of the goodies that can be ordered from the bakery so I am going to have to order one of the dog bones for DS and a slipper for me. DH isn't too keen on puddings. I normally get him to order so that I can eat it :rotfl:
We are at MNSSHP on the 7th and I can't wait.
Thanks again for your feedback, looking forward to reading day 7
Clare x
