Does anyone know how to get a baby to sleep in his crib. My son 21 months old used to be a great sleeper, about 6 months ago he started to wake at night (teething) and thinks have just snowballed from there. Now he will only sleep on a quilt on the floor or in my bed. We have tried letting him cry it out but he doesnt settle down (its also hard because he shares a room with his brother). Today I let him cry for about 45 minutes and he never stopped, I just could not let him cry anymore. Also when he sleeps in our bed he wakes up at about 530 and my Dh has to get up with him. I would apreciate any suggestions. Thanks
Tara

Just thought I'd share that my daughter was the same way and a warm bath before bed always did the trick. They also have a baby lotion out now that is supposed to be soothing, never tried it though so I don't know if it works!

Hey Tara,

I don't have any suggestions for getting him to sleep in his crib, because I started my children in beds (with railings of course) on their first birthday. I was paranoid that they would try to flip themselves out of the crib.

Maybe he is just ready to be in the big boy bed--like his brother, and mom & dad.

Sleeping on the floor with his quilt, may be his way of showing his independence. Although the comfort of mom & dad is even better of course.

Also, if you are potty training him, maybe this has carried over to his night routine, and he may be trying to go to the bathroom and crying because he did not make it??

Wish I could be of more help.

I had my DD in a twin by the time she was 21 months. I would lay down with her until she fell asleep. Gradually I just started singing one song and then leaving. I would check on her if she became extremely aggitated.

Maybe right now he just needs his Mom and Dad. :) There is nothing wrong with that. Some will say that just leads to bigger trouble, but I, personally, don't see how comfort from a parent can hurt.

JMHO. :)

personally I'd move him to a bed, too. My son is 22 months and we are planning on moving him to a bed next month. Starting with the mattress on the floor then eventually adding the boxspring and frame as he gets used to it. I planned to do this a month or so ago but have been chicken...he's a great sleeper and I'm so afraid of messing that up! twins due in April, though, so now is the time.

good luck!

Thanks everyone for your replies. We have thought about switching him to a bed, but were a little hesitant because his brother sleeps so well in his crib in the same room. For those who have switched to a bed, do you put a gate on the bdroom door or at the top of the stairs only.? I have visions of him wandering around at night. Thanks again
Tara

congrats on the twins. Multiples are definately an adventure! Enjoy them

Well, we are on one level so we don't, but my sister puts one at the top of her stairs. I put one across the hallway a few times, but she always comes into our room and snuggles for a little while in the morning. :)

We also never used a rail on her bed. One side was against the wall and on the other we would put a pillow length wise. She has never fallen out of her twin bed. She has fallen out of our queen bed twice. And I have grabbed her by the ankle as she was diving off of the bed a few times. :)

Yes, we put a gate on the door. You could gate the stairs instead though, if you are afraid of him waking up the other one.

my doctor told me to give Cameron Yogurt and bananas before bed, it really helped to fill him up and let him sleep longer. As for sleeping in the crib, I would say the best thing is to take your otehr ds out for a couple of nights ( maybe during Christmas break?) and let him sleep in the floor in the Family room or somewhere fun ( camping out) while baby gets used to his crib.

That might help?
