My 6 year old grinds his teeth all night long. Dentist said this is normal.
But it is driving me crazy!!! Anyone have any ideas?

Both of our kids do this. It sounds like chalk on a board late at night sometimes. We haven't found any way to break it yet, and the dentist says they are growing too fast for night guards. Good luck!

2 of mine did it. One did it during the day too. AWFUL sound!! We asked the dentist and we got the they'll grow out of it answer too... they both have thankfully.. the sound is so bad

My DD did it also. She's almost 19 and I don't think she's done it in a few years.

My husband does it too but it has never stopped and he has to wear a mouth guard.

I've done it since I was little. Now I only do it when I'm stressed...actually, I'm told it's more like I'm chewing in my sleep rather than grinding.

My DD7 does it too and has for about a year. Her Pediatric Dentist says the same thing. Drives me crazy!!! I was worried about her teeth but the denist says they won't be damaged.

How long did it take for your children to outgrow it?

It is also a sign that you are low in magnesium. You can try eating more magnesium rich foods or adding a suppliment.

Our kids dentist recommended a 'teeth guard' - like for sports- they are cheap enough to throw away after your child grows out of it in a year...The only hard part is to get them used to sleeping with it. After a week, my DD didn't mind it and it's safe.

We don't generally recommend night guards for growing mouths. They can interrupt natural growth and normal shifting of teeth during the "mixed dentition" stage. Generally speaking, grinding children will finally stop when they have more adult teeth than primary teeth.

I know it's annoying. My son did it too. He's 15 now and has beautiful teeth!

Good Luck!

My DS9 used to grind his teeth so bad we could hear him in our room down the hall! I hated it, it sounded awful. I didn't realize until I saw this thread that I haven't heard him do that for awhile, but I don't know how long.

He has lost most of his baby teeth now though, and his permanent teeth are coming in nicely.

Dentist told me totally normal esp with the little boys, tends to last about a year . Since their back teeth aren't permanent teeth, not a big deal at all.

Drove me crazy too, but putting my kid in his own bed to sleep and closing his door at night so I couldn't hear him grind at night from across the hall helped alot lol.

My DD did this too every night. She is 17 now, and hasn't done it in a while. Now, I noticed my DS does it every once in a while.
