Traveling with my adult son and my granddaughter (her first trip!) early Feb. She still needs a booster seat in a car. My plan is to carry on her car booster seat on the plane (putting it in overhead bin) so that we can use it when we get Lyft transport from the airport. Is this allowed? I see Lyft now has option of a car that provides a seat but they add $10 or so. Her booster is pretty compact and I don't mind bringing it. Do they allow bringing your own?? Thanks.

You should have no problem bringing a booster on a plane as carry on. One might even fit under the seat in front. FAA rules don’t allow the use of a booster on a plane though. It might even be allowed as a free checkin as they would checkin a regular child car seat.

Booster seats are free items. You can put in overhead bins. We travel with collapsible boosters to make it even easier.

Never heard of collapsible boosters! I'll look that up.

You can bring and install your own car seats and booster seats in Lyft and Uber. They won’t install them for you though.

We bring the booster on the plane and put it in the overhead compartment. We don't check it, as the way they handle baggage scares me when it's a safety item for my child/grandchild.

When we hop into our Uber/Lyft, I just throw the booster in and buckle up. Never has anyone complained about it. ... Well, no one but the kid, who was made to hold the booster for 5 minutes at some point, lol!

As for using a Lyft that has a carseat option, no way in heck would I do it.

Why not? Because:
*Is there a driver nearby and available with the option?
*Is it the right size for my child/grandchild?
*Is it accident free?
*Is it clean?
*Has it been checked for proper installation?

If the answer to any of those questions is "no," then you are stuck wherever, without a safe and or legal ride. Bad way to start a vacation!

(I know you already said you're fine bringing her booster. Really my response is for when someone searches the same question, so they see why it's not something I would chance. :) )

bring a booster - you can gate check or put it in overhead. We have the high back version of the mifold (hifold) and it's awesome, especially for 4/5 year old that really should still have a back. Also have used bubble bum for an older, taller kid. Even your average plastic graco booster is easy enough to take, so definitely take your own so you don't need to worry about it!

ALSO for others who may check this thread, the ride safer harness is an approved carseat for kids 3 and older, and 30 (?) lbs and up. It's a total game changer for kids who still need a 5 pt. harness. Kind of pricey ($150) but WELL worth it for the portability of travel or even if you change vehicles frequently at home.

My daughter is 6 and use the mifold compact booster seat. It's design is to position the seat belt correctly on the child, versus lifting the child up to the seat belt. It is about the size of a small handbag (or half a piece of paper). It is a game changer when traveling with young kids!

But what about taking a Lyft to DLR? What would you do with the booster seats once you got there if you used your own?

The travel boosters, e.g. Mifold and Bubblebum, fit easily In a tote bag, so they can be carried in a stroller in the parks. Some families store the boosters (and lots of other things) in a locker all day.

For size comparison, here is the Mifold next to a pack of baby wipes. It would easily fit in a backpack or the undercarriage of a stroller.

Note that the Mifold is rated for children 4 years and up, 40-100 pounds, and 40-57 inches, who are capable of using a booster seat without a five-point harness. My son is just transitioning to booster seats. About a month before our vacation, we are going to start using the Mifold in my car, starting with short trips, so he can “practice”. If you had a full booster, you’d need to store it in a locker.

We’ve had a mifold for 2+ years, and it’s a lifesaver for travel. It just stays in a backpack or purse when we use it to get to a destination while on vacation.

We will be going straight to hotel from airport, so it won't be a problem leaving it at hotel. We don't get in until 6pm.

There's large-ish lockers in the esplanade that you can store them in. ... But we always stay within walking distance so we don't need to deal with Lyft/Uber to/from the parks; only to/from the airport/hotel. If you're too far to walk, there's also the ART (Anaheim Resort Transit) system and OCTA (Orange County Transit).
