Going to take the family to Chicago this coming week to see the Disney exhibit at the Museum of Science and industry. It's also my birthday. We will be staying in the Woodfield mall area and possible downtown a night or two. Does anyone have a suggestion for a place to have a fun birthday meal with kids? Also wondering if there are any dinner shows that might work?

There are about a million restaurants to choose from! If you are looking for casual touristy types you can't go wrong with Ed Debevicks or Gino's East. For upscale Italian, I love Trattoria no 10.

There are some dinner theatre packages I think, but honestly have never done them.

A great dinner show is Tommy's Gun Garage. It's a speakeasy/gangster type. Great food, great show. I'm not sure how old your kids are, so this one might need some research.

If you're willing to drive about 45 minutes outside the city, Medieval Times is FANTASTIC. It's in Schaumburg. The show is in an arena and they put on a whole show of knights jousting etc. the meal is "traditional" served without utensils etc. your waitresses are wenches. Good times. My family LOVES this.

Was looking at both of those dinner shows. We have done Al Capones in Kissismee, and Tommy Guns looks similar. Kids loved it. I'm not sure about medieval times. Just not sure it would hold their interest. Also looking at the laugh out loud family show. We are planning to do dinner another night at Ed's. Wish we could manage to do Blue Man Group.

If you're in Schaumburg there's Medieval Times, Cheesecake Factory, Wildfire, Maggianos.... Actually tons of different restaurants.

Well I don't know your kids, but it's fun for our whole family: adult - 6. Its a pretty engaging show.

I vote medieval times too! You are right there in the same time as the castle.
How old are your kids?

You could grab dinner anywhere in Schaumburg, tons of places. & see a family friendly improv comedy show. We've gone to this theater, it is sometimes hit or miss http://laughoutloudtheater.com

Depending in the ages of your kids, lego land is attached to Woodfield mall in their off shoot stores (streets of Woodfield)

ETA: OP sorry I must be really tired, I didn't see that you already knew about the laugh out loud theater. If you have teens & like comedy, definitely check out the second city. http://www.secondcity.com

Hi! I hope you have a great time in our beautiful city!

Scoozi's (Italian) is great and kids eat free (until around 6 pm--make their own pizza), Quartino's is delicious (Italian tapas-like dishes--small plates to share). Both are downtown. You can also go to Navy Pier (touristy but beautiful views of skyline). In Lincoln Park, there's the Chicago Pizza and Ovengrinder (pizza pot pies!)--cash only and no reservations accepted (the building it's in was the look out for Capone's gang during St. Valentine's Day massacre. I love Lou Malnati's pizza (also one in Schaumburg on Roselle Road).

For Chicago hot dogs--Portillo's downtown is good.

Greek Town is also a fun place to eat--very lively and great food!
