The United States Olympic Committee has announced its selection of Chicago as the American candidate city for the 2016 Olympic Games. Chicago beat out Los Angeles for the honor. The International Olympic Committee will select the site of the 2016 Games in 2009. So far it appears that Chicago will be competing against Tokyo, Madrid, Rome, and Rio.

Congratulations Chicago! I think the chances of Chicago winning the Games are very good.

We were listening on the radio and it took them FOREVER to say which city was selected! LOL

We are excited. DD will be 16 (millenium baby) and the right age to volunteer and really enjoy all the Olympics have to offer.

Say what you will about Mayor Daley, when he puts his mind to it, things get done.

Yeah! If we do win...may be at WDW to beat the crowds here.lol.:)

Okay, stupid question maybe...but do they already know the dates of the 2016 Olympics?

Isn't it usually in July or August?

Wait...doesn't the IOCC have to choose where it will be held now?
Chicago is what we have to offer, but don't they have to look at the other choices...whatever they are?
I am hoping for Chicago. We are in Ohio and I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to go see the Olympics!
Anything...I don't care...I just want to be there.

Generally, I believe it is in Aug. I did a quick search and can't find any firm dates. It is interesting that Rio is in competition seeing as it is in the southern hemi. Wouldn't that make it winter there?

Oh that would be awesome! I hope Chicago gets to host the Olympics, I would be there!

Australia hosted the 2000 games. They were held in October so it was more spring than winter.

Yea!!! Let's go Chicago!

I love the mayor!!
It would be awsome to see some olympic events so close to home!!

Yep. Daley's a hoot and very, very smart despite his often hilarious public speaking gaffs. He is the guy to get it done. Anyone want to rent my house in nine years???

Chicago is a great city! Let’s hope they get the games!

What happened to New York? Did they not have another go at getting the games?

Nope. :sad2: I think once the West Side Stadium plan fell through, their hopes of 2012/2016 went with it. Also, the city wasn't really behind it as much as the other competing cities in 2012. It just fizzled away.

I think NY would have been a great city to have it. But I'm so happy Chicago got it over LA!!

That is too bad...New York would have been great too. I don't know if it's big enough but Orlando would be a really cool place to have it too (although the heat/humidity might be a factor...).

Anyway...you're right- Chicago over LA anyday!

Well done to Chicago, I hope you pass the next round and the IOC choose you as the venue.

I for one plan on attending as many Olympic events as possible in 2012 when London hosts the Olympic Games. I live an hour away from London an can already see the positive effects the Olympics can have on a town (my town is currently building an olympic swimming complex to relpace our current small swimming pool).

So here is hoping Chicago for 2016

:rotfl2: I was thinking the same thing!!! My first thought when I heard it was 'oh my, maybe a time for vacation?' but then thought it's a once in a lifetime thing so we will see, that's really a long way off.

DH couldn't stand the crowds at Disney though when we went in the summer of 2005 -- Having the Olympics nearby might push him over the edge. I think we are far enough out that it probably won't affect us but who knows.

Edited -- I like the idea of a DIS meet. By the way, since I live under a rock & wasn't paying any attention, is this for the summer or winter Olympics? I knew they were pushing to have Chicago in the running but wasn't paying attention. :upsidedow I guess I need to brush up now that it's in the running.

They would probably use Tampa Bay too and would probably need additional venues built. And I think the hurricane season would prevent it since they are held in Aug/Sept I believe. But that would be neat too!!
