As soon as DF and I get back our tax return money, we are going to start saving for our very short (four-day), sole vacation of the year - to Chicago.

So where are the best places to stay, and what are some things we can't miss?

What time of year would you be going?

Sorry, forgot to mention that.

We'd be there in the summer - sometime between May and August.

Youll lovvvvve the city.

Navy Pier - Shopping on Michigan avenue - the food, YUM!

Oh brotherI have no idea why my post came up 3 times.

Wrigley Field, though you'll probably have to scalp tickets. ;)
The aquarium is nice. The Museum of Science and Industry too. Navy Pier to just walk around.
Go to Ed Dbevic's(sp?) for an unusual dining experience.

I'd stay somewhere on or near Michigan Avenue that way you can walk almost anywhere you go. We've stayed at Hard Rock Hotel on Michigan Avenue & at House of Blues, which is close by. We always use Priceline so we don't get to pick our hotel, but we get a really good deal. :thumbsup2

It depends on what month you want to come. www.chicagotraveler.com has a complete calendar of events.

In late June, early July, right before and after the 4th, is Taste of Chicago.
Aug 18-19 is the Air and Water show on the lakefront (free)
All summer long there are festivals in Grant Park just about every weekend.
Millenium Park is great to stroll in (also free)
Then there are all the tourist stuff like the museums and Navy Pier.

I highly recc. gettting a City Pass. It will get you reduced admission to the 6 biggest attractions and a big PLUS is that you don't have to wait in line at each place.

Have fun, Chicago is a jewel in summer (now, when it is 1 degree, not so much :p )

This sounds like something we should probably do! Where do you get one?

My favorite places to eat in Chicago are Gino's for pizza and Wildfire for steak. Yummm. Now I want to go, too. :goodvibes

I just looked and it is now the five biggest attractions:

Shedd Aquarium
Field Museum
Adler Planetarium
Museumo of Sci and Industry
The Hancock Observatory

The really nice thing is that the passes generally include all the extras so you really get a good deal. We have actually had a weekend in the city playing tourist and it is fun.

if it is going to be just the two of you, I'd wait until a couple months out and Priceline a 4* in either the Michigan Avenue area or the Millenium Park area.

travel in the downtown area is a breeze during the touristy months with all the shuttles and busses.

Navy Pier is definitely fun in the summer. Fireworks on Saturdays.

We also like going to the Signature Room restaurant at the top of the Hancock for a drink - great views.

Take a river boat tour.

Millenium Park is great.

To eat: Ed Debevics for lunch...Lawrys Steak House if you like Prime Rib, Ginos East or Uno's if you like Pizza

There is so much more, if I remember, I'll post!

ps - Cubs games are awesome, and if you can't get tickets, just going to the bars and restauants across from the park can be fun too.

You should take the lake/river cruise. My girlfriends and I did this last summer and it was so much fun. Our guide was awesome! I've taken another river architecture cruise and this one was way better.
