I was just on the phone with my friend who told me he was at the ER last night because of chest pains....They told him they think it may be something with his esophagus that is causing pains in his chest--he is going to get tests done but i was wondering if anyone has heard of this and any ideas of what it could be? I know hes atthe doctor now, but i was just trying to think of what it could be..thanks

Sounds sort of like heartburn. Or acid reflux. Someone else may have a better idea.

Acid reflux disease can cause esophagus spasms that are quite painful. I know, believe me! It's in the chest area and can mimic heart attack symptoms. I'll bet that's what happened.

It could be damage to his esophagus due to acid reflux (stomach acid going up into the espogus and damaging the lining). If the pains continue, make sure that your friend insist they do a cardiac stress test; my (ex) doctor misdiagnosed my chest pains for 6 months as either acid reflux or cartilege damage in my ribcage. Then I had a heart attack and the ER docs said there was evidence that I had been having little cardiac episodes for months; in fact, my heart had built its own bypass around an arterial blockage by opening up all the capillaries in the tissue of my left ventricle so the blood just seeped out and was reabsorbed by the heart! (It works much better now that they unblocked the artery and put a stent in!)

I went with chest pains, and it was gastritis. I get acid reflux too, not so bad that I want to take a pill everyday.

Same thing happened to my husband...had chest pain one evening. Went to the walk in clinic and spent a few hours having tests. They said it was indigestion and gave him a "cocktail" to make him feel better. Went home, and he had more chest pain. It was so bad we called the ambulance. More tests at the ER, all negative. The doctor taking the history finally narrowed it down...the previous week my husband had checked on a piece of food and did some damage to his esophagus. Scratched it or something. We talked to our regular doctor the next day, because the ER doc recommended having some tests involving s camera down the throat. The regular doctor said they were really expensive and to hold off and see how he felt in a few days. No problem since.

A couple of years ago, I was hospitalized overnight for the same problem. I had tightness in my chest and pains radiating down my left arm. It was acid reflux.

i had severe chest pains in september. had blood tests done and an echo done and both came back with no problems. the dr suspected anxiety/depression since i told him it had all started about 2 weeks before i had a severe panic attack one night. it was scary. i also had problems with acid reflux because of it.

i've been on lexapro since and i feel amazing, haven't had chest pains or acid reflux because of it since.

is your friend undergoing a lot of stress? that might be a problem.

He was in Iraq for awhile, but has been back for about 2-3 months now--every time i talk to him, hes fine, busy, b ut fine...
Havent heard from him, but will call him tomorrow..thanks guys!

My mom kept having these really bad chest pains every time she ate. Scared us to death! When she went to the dr they told her she had burned her esophogus and that was what was causing the pain (since it wasn't healed yet).
