The naval base is in Norfolk (which is pretty close).

There are several Navy bases within commuting distance of Chesapeake. There is Norfolk, Dam Neck, Oceana and Little Creek. Norfolk is probably the closest though, however Dam Neck and Oceana aren't too far if you take the back roads from Virginia Beach.

I live in a military town. My first thought was that you were joking because around here that question would be like "does milk come from cows?" LOL! I guess I'm getting more used to living around the military than I thought!

We lived in the Greenbrier neighborhood of Chesapeake (eastern part of the city, on the border of Virginia Beach) before we moved here to PA. Norfolk Naval Base is approximately a 20 mile commute from that part of town. NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach is about the same, along with Dam Neck and Little Creek (a little closer at about 15 miles).
