Cheesesteaks

Celebrated today! Shared with DH from our local store. We like them with extra provolone, sautéed mushrooms and onions.

It was delicious!

We had a lot of fun the couple of times we visited Pats and Genos! (One night at 4am in the pouring rain passing through Philly!) And we liked the cheesteaks (Genos > Pats; tried them both). They seem to do a good business anyway!

Pat’s and Geno’s can be fun at 4am after a night of drinking. I’ll also give the slight edge to Geno’s.

Unlucky us live in St. Looey where everybody seems to think a cheesesteak requires chopped green peppers. GRRROOOSSS!

But, if you've ever had the misfortune to try St. Louis-style pizza, you'll understand why restaurants here murder cheesesteaks. It gives abomination a whole new level of meaning.

I had no idea there was a holiday for this! I will have to have one soon to make up for missing it.

Would any self respecting Philly resident ever step foot in those two places? Aren't they reserved for the tourists? Going to those places is like visiting NYC and getting a slice at Sbarros... (221) The Office - New York Slice! - YouTube

I THINK people from the surrounding neighborhoods go there, as do other area residents after a baseball/football/hockey/basketball game or a concert.

But in general, people stick to places in their own locales.

Yes you are right about the bridge and tunnel crowd hitting Pats and Genos after a Phillies game. Same thing here in Seattle watching all of the tourists waiting 60 minutes at Pike Place Market to get into one of the first Starbucks store. The drinks there taste the same as you get back home folks. Plus there is no lightening lane or mobile order at that Starbucks.

You HAD to mention NYC and pizza, didn't you?

DiFara's in Brooklyn--The Essence of NY-style Pizza.

Dom De Marco, founder, may you rest in peace. That man was the King of Slice.

Of course I had to mention NYC pizza. You know me.... :stir: :stir: :stir: :stir:

Agreed. The one of Avenue J in Brooklyn, correct? I meant to make it out there when I was in NYC last October but we were at the Brooklyn Zoo and I wanted to go but it was closed on Monday.

Ahhh the cheesesteak, easily the most over rated sandwich in the world despite also being one of my favorites. No other sandwich gets all the faux expertise bloviating from blowhards than the cheesesteak. And if by some chance you simply don't like orange plastic on a sandwich, well you're not authentic and you've never been to Philly. And if you've been to Philly and don't like it you went to the wrong place. And if you went to the right place and still don't like it, it must be because you ordered wrong. It's not even about the sandwich any more. It's just an excuse to be smug like New Yorkers and their magical pizza made by unicorns.

I like em with real cheese, onions, and mushrooms. I also had a pizza steak too. Was really good. My favorite place in Philly to get em is John's Roast Pork. But if you like orange plastic on your sandwich, don't go there. They don't have it. For Cheesesteak day I had Provolone, onions, and mushrooms on my cheesesteak. MMMMMM. As for Geno's and Pat's I guess Pat's is ok if you like the the historical nostalgia. I don't see any reason to go to Geno's.

I have a theory. Newly formed. St. Louis Pizza cheese and Cheez wiz are made in a ghost kitchen by the same manufacturer. ACME plastics.

Disagree... The most overrated sandwich is the Monte Crisco at Disneyland. A total gut bomb and one time ruined my whole afternoon at the park. A big fat pile of grease.

Yes, indeed. "Poor" DH grew up a block and a half from it.

When he took me there the first time, Dom gestured to us to come on past 2-3 others and order. Recognized DH as a neighborhood guy and regular even though it'd been 4-5 years since DH had lived there. Dom was amazing.

Back on topic--We liked Pat's Cheese Wiz wit', tourists that we were. Still a pretty dang decent sammich even if not up to a connoisseur like RedAngie's standards. 😁

Naw, not even self-aware plastic cheese will claim Provel, the strictly regional sludge used on St. Louis-style pizza. (There's a reason you can only buy it within a short distance of the city. Nobody else wants it!)

It's extruded in pencil-thick ropes from a combo of white cheddar, Swiss and provolone. You'd think that would be tasty, but ohhhh, nooooo. They do something despicable that results in Provel smelling like dirty gym socks. I am NOT joking.

And then, a St. Looey pizza has a cracker-crunchy crust with decidedly sweet red sauce and is round but must be cut into squares to be authentic. Craziest imitation of pizza ever!

Amazingly, this city is also noted for Gooey Butter Cake which is as fabulous as the pizza is hideous. Go figger.
