Hello there!
We've been back from our Adults-Only WDW trip for a week now. This week has been nuts here, catching up with loose ends. I'm working on our trip report, but I've only got the pre-trip portion written so far (since the work week is crazy I've been working from home until the wee hours of the morning every day).
Cliff's Notes version:
We left the kids at home, and went with our friends StitchIsOurHero & StitchIsARedSoxFan (heretofore referred to as SIOH & SIARSF). The kids were back in school (they had Spring Break the week before), and they stayed with Nana & Papaw (KAMommy's parents) at our house.
Friday 3/16 - Studios. We flew out of Knoxville EARLY for our 7:30 flight and we were in Orlando (Sanford) by 9:30 that morning. Checked into POP for our first couple of days (we stayed in the 60's building to the right of the Hippy Dippy pool (Playdoh building), our rooms (4446 & 4447) were adjoining along the back side of the building - looking over Hourglass Lake. The rooms weren't ready, so we checked all of our luggage with Bell Services and headed into the parks. We wanted to do Studios the first day, so that's where we went. There were only a few certain things we wanted to do so we paced ourselves. We ate dinner at 50's Prime Time. Once we knew our rooms were ready (that call-in service is great), we headed back to POP and unpacked. We went swimming in the Hippy Dippy pool, and tucked in kind of early (we all had been awake since 3:30).
Saturday 3/17 - Magic Kingdom & Downtown Disney. We had to be there before park opening to do the Keys To The Kingdom tour. I HIGHLY recommend it. It was a great way to spend some of the day. It is a whole lot of walking & standing around, but what ain't when you're at Disney World? We did behind-the-scenes stuff on Main St., went back to the float staging area, rode Haunted Mansion & Jungle Cruise with some pointers to watch out for certain things, and ended in the Utilidor sections below Main St. You have to be at least 16, so we can't do that when we're with the kids. We ate lunch at Columbia Harbor House (included as part of the KttK tour). Anyway, the tour ended about 1:30, so we hung around Magic Kingdom the rest of the day. Mike's Laugh Floor was soft-opening so we got to do that. Later that evening we went to Downtown Disney for food (Earl of Sandwich & Goofy's Candy Co.) and St. Paddy's Day festivities (and for me to get myself a
Lego set...). We then went back to POP and packed up for our move to Old Key West.
Sunday 3/18 - Animal Kingdom & Magic Kingdom (late EMH). We woke up early (5:30) and called a cab to take us (and our luggage) over to Old Key West. We were over there by 7:30 and started checking in. KAMommy & I went smoothly, but they had SIOH/SIARSF's reservation all screwed up - at one time the Cast Member was looking IN THE WRONG RESERVATION ACCOUNT!!! We realized something wasn't quite right when the CM asked which of them was Hal Hanson (their last name is
Johannsen)... We had requested adjoining studio suites, but since the SNAFU with SIOH/SIARSF's check-in, none of those units were available. We ended up with studio units (1320 & 1326) in the same building, but on opposite ends of the building. Did not start that day on the right foot. And that's all I'll say about that.
Even with the problems, we were done checking in by 8:15. Of course our suites weren't ready yet, so we checked our luggage in with Bell Services, took a quick tour of the resort (SIOH/SIARSF had never been there), and caught the AK bus. We were there well before rope drop, and had a great morning. We ate lunch at Tusker House and let the ladies do some character stalking in Camp Minnie-Mickey in the afternoon. We headed back to OKW to get changed for dinner and drop off additional crap we didn't want to lug around MK later that night. Our dinner was at Whispering Canyon in the Wilderness Lodge, where we asked (and received) our favorite server Jenna. Good times were had by all, and we caught the boat to MK. It was very crowded so we didn't get a chance to ride lots of rides (just BTMRR & Buzz - Splash Mnt. & Space Mnt. were closed), did the late Spectromagic parade. We got back to OKW about 12:30 - beddy-bye time by 1:00 or 1:15... We just did it to prove to ourselves that we (middle-aged folks that we are) could still hang with all the young-uns.
Monday 3/19 - Epcot
We were up at 6:15! and took a cab to Polynesian for our 7:30 Ohana breakfast. Eat, eat, eat... We hopped the monorail to Epcot and grabbed FPs for Soarin immediately. Did the Living Seas & Imagination w/ Figment and then decided to see what our chances were of getting a last-minute reservation at Garden Grill in the Land. Score - we were able to get a table for later that afternoon!!! The girls wanted to do Character Connection, so we did that, and Brian & I got FPs for Test Track. Still wasn't time for either of our FPs (Soarin or Test Track) so we headed to World Showcase. SIOH had heard a rumor that the 3 Cabelleros showed up in Mexico at certain times, so we waited for that. Waited. and Waited. I think they finally just found a couple of CMs, put 'em in 2 of the 3 Cabelleros costumes just to get rid of us. By this time our Garden Grill time was coming up, so we did that. Ate Ate Ate (I forgot how good the catfish is there). After dinner, we realized how tired we were getting, so we headed back to OKW without riding either Soarin' or Test Track...
Took nice naps and woke up at 6:00. We knew that there are some Animal Kingdom Villas model suites set up at Saratoga Springs, and we wanted to see them (SIOH/SIARSF already have some AKV add-on points, and we're strongly considering it). So we got dressed and rode the boat from OKW to Sar Springs - got there at 7:10, and... The AKV model suites close at 7:00 each night. Crap, dang. So we grabbed a light dinner at the counter service there (I think it's called Artiste's Pallette or something like that - too lazy to look it up right now). Looked around Saratoga Springs resort quite a bit. It's SIOH/SIARSF's home DVC resort, and KAMommy & I had very limited time (basically all we had ever done is drove through while it was under construction, and rode a ME bus through once). Very nice resort. We were back at OKW by 9:00 and started a rousing card game (Phase 10) in our suite.
Tuesday 3/20 - Studios & Magic Kingdom. Headed over to Studios early, and were there by rope drop. We rode Tower of Terror (well, SIARSF & I did) and we all rode RnRC (2x) right away. Grabbed a couple of cinnamon rolls from Starring Rolls and then let me get my Star Wars geek out in the Star Wars area. We were pacing ourselves and pretty much had already done alot on our previous day, so once all that was done we grabbed the bus to Contemporary. We walked from Contemporary to Magic Kingdom (bus & monorail lines were LONG), grabbed some Figaro Fries from Pinocchio Village Haus for a light lunch. We finally rode Space Mnt. & did the FantasyLand / TomorrowLand / Toon Town area. The ladies got their shopping ya-yas out, and we grabbed a bus to Beach Club for dinner. We ate at Cape May (Yum) and walked around the resort some (it's KAMommy & my's DVC home resort - yeah, I know the grammar there is screwed). Headed back to OKW, continued our Phase 10 tournament and drank beer.
Wednesday 3/21 - Animal Kingdom. We might have gone to Epcot, but I was out-voted 3 to 1. So we went to AK. I'm such a martyr... We did early safari and the animals were more active than we'd ever seen... Ate some breakfast pastries at Tusker House, and did Everest & watched the new Nemo musical. Lunch was at Flame Tree & we shopped on the way out. We got back to OKW for naps. Woke up at 4:00 and rode the boat back over to Sar. Springs. We did the AKV model suites and threw in the Sar. Springs model suites too while we were there (we had time before our dinner reservations). The grand villa (3-bedroom) has to be seen to be believed. We caught a bus to Epcot and then transferred to a Animal Kingdom Lodge bus to get to dinner. Our dinner was at Boma, and we asked for (and received) the deep-fried oreos for dessert. We grabbed the first bus that came by (Downtown Disney) and transferred to the OKW bus. Headed back, and started packing.
Thursday 3/22 - Magic Kingdom. Final packing and cart our crap to Bell Services & check out. Caught a bus to Magic Kingdom, and reported for breakfast at Main St. Bakery right after rope drop. Ate our pastries, and used the morning for photography (to help document the KttK tour). We also hadn't had the chance to ride Splash Mtn. so we headed over there - short line (in Splash Mountain terms, anyway). And waited. And waited. All this time they were announcing problems with the ride, but we were optimists and we moved up the line as people ahead of us left. We could see the boarding area most of the time, and they'd send a couple of logs through every now and then. After about an hour, CMs came out and said they were going to close the ride down for an indeterminant amount of time. We finally bailed. Sloppy seconds were PotC, which was good, as always. And then we rode the standard Jungle Cruise (which SIOH/SIARSF had never done before the KttK tour). Grabbed our last lunch at Pecos Bill, and headed to Main St. for last minute shopping and photos. Got our Photopass cd made and hopped on the bus back to OKW. We got our luggage out of Bell Services, and waited for our pre-arranged cab. When he got there we headed back up to Sanford, waited in the terminal for 2 1/2 hours and made our 5:45 flight out. Landed in Knoxville at 7:15. They had problems with the luggage carousel so the luggage didn't start coming out until after 8:00. We were getting hungry again, so the girls got our car and swung through a nearby drive-thru. We collected all of our luggage by 8:20, and SIARSF noticed some oil on one of their pieces of luggage. So we waited for him to file a damage claim, which took a while since the airline's office staff had left for the day (they had to call the manager from home). We left the airport by 9:30, and were home by 10:15. Hugged the kids, gave 'em their gifts, and all went to bed.
The end.
