Good evening everyone, :goodvibes

We leave in a few days for our vacation :woohoo: I would love to be able to check my email and/or facebook every few days that we are down there. I don't own a laptop, so obviously won't be bringing one ;). I have decided to leave my BlackBerry at home (I've heard it gets quite expensive). The only thing that we will have is my son's ipod touch which has wifi, but I understand there isn't wifi in Disney. :confused3 We are staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Can someone help me out on where I can access a computer or how I can make my son's ipod touch work for me?
Thanks very much
Erin

Hi Erin,
You're right, there isn't any WIFI that I'm aware of at Disney Resorts. (at least there wasn't at All Star Movies or Caribbean Beach). What you may want to do, assuming you're on the DDP, is do your internet at a DTD restaurant while on the DDP. It takes a bit of time for your order to arrive, so take your time, enjoy a meal and email away!
I always bring my laptop along and check my email in the later evening on a Monday, check again when back from the parks on the early Tuesday evening and thus get enough time in for the 24hr Internet payment. I may skip Wednesday, then go again on that same schedule for Thursday/Friday. You get a week's worth of Internet and just have to pay for two 24 hour periods.

Thank you for your replies! Does all of Downtown Disney have wifi, or just the restaurants?

I guess I have another question. I just got off the phone with Telus and asked them about their roaming charges down there. I have their Social Networking plan for my BlackBerry and would only really use the phone to check my facebook page/messages if I did bring it with me. (I won't be using it for phone calls)

Telus informed me that they charge $3 per MB when in the United States. I just checked my account and looked at my data usage for the last week. I used 12952 KB which I think equals about 12.7MB...is that correct? If that is the case, then if I checked my Facebook as often as I do at home/work (which I wouldn't) then I would only pay about $38. That doesn't seem right! I always hear of people being charged thousands of dollars when they travel with their phone. Would there be other charges that they aren't telling me about (not for phone calls or texting)

Thanks again,
Erin

If you are with Telus you can get the "US Data Pass 10". It costs $10 for 30 days and automatically drops off unless you renew it. You then get your data at $1/MB instead of $3/MB and you don't need to worry about it all.

I would also check with Telus because your Social plan includes Free Texting which I don't think is included in the US.

Thank you very much for your help!! I am so electronically-challenged and have great difficulty trying to figure this all out.

I looked on Telus' website and seen their US Data plan for $10, so I am going to add that on. Can you please tell me if my calculations are correct from post #4 though? Is it that inexpensive for my roaming or are there other charges that Telus isn't telling me about? I am just nervous because I've heard horror stories about people coming home to $4000 and up cell phone bills.

Thanks again,
Erin

do you have a laptop/netbook? I think there were outlets in the hotel rooms.
We have an Ipod touch and there wasn't any wifi in the parks or at Pop. I needed a school email in December so I used the computer at the Contemporary but it was expensive.

You can pick wireless router (the Apple Airport Express is really easy to set up) and plug it into the Internet port in your room to create your own WiFi hotspot. You'd still have to pay the fees for Internet access in the room, but it will allow you to get your Touch up and running.

I am not with Telus because I have Bell. However I always purchase their American calling and texting plans which gives me 100 roaming free minutes and 100 text messages which are also roaming free when I write them. I also have a BlackBerry but for whatever reason they don't have any e-mail plans while in the United States, because I am charged for everytime I write one.

There are many places that you could use resort wifi to access email, facebook, etc. Basically, any resort that might host a convention will have wifi capability. It isn't free, but it's much more convenient than bringing a wireless router to create your own wifi hot spot.

Coronado Springs is one of those resorts with convention rooms. I never had my laptop then so I never tried.
