I am so sad right now. I just noticed that I have lost a diamond out of my wedding ring set!! I felt something sharp and looked and noticed that one of the small diamonds is missing!! I only recently had it sodered together (like in the last couple of months) after years of putting it off, but it needed to be resized anyway so had it all done. It seems like the jewler would have noticed a bad prong than. Just great...can only imagine what its going to cost to replace. Wonder if insurance will cover it??

This happened to my mom last week. She went nuts for several days and then she found the diamond in her jean pocket. Go check your pockets.

Where did this happen? Maybe your homeowner's will cover it. I'd check into it.

Your homeowner's policy may cover it, but you'll have a deductible. I"m sorry this happened to you.

I had a heart stopping moment a few months ago. I had just had my engagement diamond reset into a new setting....a few weeks later I was drying off after getting out of the shower and looked down and the stone was gone. GASP! I figured it was down the drain and lost forever. I went to the phone and called my sister in law (she used to be an insurance agent and I wanted to ask her what to do) and cried. Then I decided to go back and look on the floor of the shower....figured it was a useless waste of time but I had to do it anyway.

There it was!

I can probably give you a little more info bubbleprincessmom, I work for a jewelry manufacturer. Here is a little info to help you out...

First of all take a deep breath and relax. If it is a small side diamond the cost of the repair shouldn't be too terrible of a bite, and will probably be less than your deductible. Even if you have no deductible, you might not want to risk raising your rates for such a small claim. This might seem like the end of the world, but it happens.

Some settings are just made in ways that you can loose stones. We design our rings so this doesn't happen as much, but there are a lot of rings made overseas where the metal isn't there to hold the stones. I can tell you about some very poorly made jewelry I have seen, but yours probably isn't what I like to call "Cruise/Junket Jewelry".

When you have the diamond replaced, I would have them check the rest of the stones for tightness, and make sure that the channels don't need any reenforcement if it is channel set, If it is Pavee, well, loosing stones is part of the deal. Ask the jeweler to see a loupe (a fancy magnifying glass) and see just how little metal is holding those diamonds in. I never recommend Pavee on an engagement ring because you do loose stones. Platinum lasts longer, so if you have to have the pavee, I strongly urge you to make the ring in Platinum.

Sizing can also loosen the diamonds. We check all diamonds after the rings come out of our shop when we size a ring. I would think your jeweler did that as well.

Getting back to the ring quality, I have seen rings (generally ones made in Asia, Mexico, or other places with very inexpensive outsourced labor) put together with Solder. This means that they have lighter prongs and channels. I hope this is not the case with your ring, but this could make the problem worse.

Additionally, there is wear and tear. over time things just move, prongs get worn and need to be re-tipped. GIA (The Gemological Institute of America) recommends that you have you stones checked every 6 months.

OK, here is my recommendation, Sorry if I am repeating myself...

If you liked the jeweler who fixed your rings, take it to them and ask how much it will be to replace the diamond. Generally if it is a small stone, the repair and diamond are not a great cost, and should be much lower than your insurance deductible. Without seeing the ring I cannot give a better estimate. If you feel like the jeweler broke your ring, or was not ethical, I would try The Place The Ring Was Purchased from (if it isn't the same place), or you can find a new jeweler. If you are looking for a new jeweler and don't want to ask around you can look for industry accreditation (IE is the store a member of AGS- the American Gem Society) AGS stores have to have been in business for a few years and are required to have someone on staff who is trained and is certified to grade diamonds.

I hope this helps!!!!!

I'm sorry.

Thanks for the reminder. I hope your insurance covers this loss.

Sorry to hear you lost a diamond, bubbleprincessmom. That would upset me as well!

It's a good idea to have the prongs checked on rings. My aunt lost the center diamond of her engagement ring some time ago. She owned horses and was in the barn with them one day. She put her hands into the pockets of her jeans, pulled them out and promptly lost the diamond--in a horse barn full of hay! She never found the diamond.

It was that story that made me choose an engagement ring with no prongs. I'm too afraid of losing a stone!

But ohanafamily's advice is good. If you take your rings in to get the prongs checked, they would spot a problem before it becomes serious.

Sorry for you. Yes I imagine it would be scary. I worry about this myself. Thanks for the reminder. Hope all works out for you.

OMG, i FORGOT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.....

Sometimes I get buried in the details... Sorry.

Good luck, and if you want it repaired before the holidays, you might want to get this taken care of quickly. I showed up at work today (yes, I work on Saturdays) and there was a big note on the place we bring our repairs to (inside the office) it said that the cut-off date for repairs for us is next Saturday. We are geared up for the holiday season, and new sales take precedence.

I hope you don't mind the gentle nudge.

PS, Hi Katholyn, another one of our Super MODels.....

Great advice. :)

My mom worked at Hardees for a while. Her morning work was making biscuits. She lost her diamond in the biscuits one morning. Never found it.

I can feel your pain. I lost the diamond out of my engagement ring a couple months ago. I was so upset when I noticed it. But later I noticed something sparkly on the floor, right in front of the refrigerator, and there was my diamond!! Had it repaired for $60. I will have the prongs checked regularly from now on.

Check your bed. I lost a diamond once (it was a cluster ring and the entire cluster fell off). I found it in the bed the next morning.
