I'm so excited..

I checked the unclaimed property website and my name was listed filed a claim they sent me a form asking for a copy of my social secrurity card, photo id, and proof of old address .. I sent everything to them..
And I received a check yesterday for $540 ....

I'm glad you got the money... but it sounds like you sent them copies of everything anyone would need to perpetuate identity fraud.

And when you deposit that check, they'll have your bank account information.

Personally, I'd keep a REAL close eye on all of your financial accounts and credit reports now, just in case.

I think each state may have one. I don't think it is fraud. I searched my name and there is unclaimed money for me from when I had an investment property. I dont' know how much it is though. I don't think I have to send in as much ID as the original poster. But i doubt it would be fraud if they sent them $540. If it were fraud they would send them nothing.

The letter they sent me came from the State office in Richmond..( I live in Va.) and included a phone # ( I called before sending any info) then sent the info certified and the check is from State of Va.. Treasure office ( sealed just like the check you receive from tax refund)

You're safe as long as it's with a state agency. I check all of the states my family lived in, so far nothing!

Each state has an unclaimed fund run by the Comptroller of the treasury. There is a main site, but the one I find asks for a fee-you shouldn't have to pay a fee.

Way before they went online, I'd received a letter from a company that offered to get my money (for a fee). I contacted the comptroller of NY myself and got a check for a school account back.

When they first went online, I found my great grandmother on the site. My mom contacted them with the proper information-she'd had Bell stock from the 30's. Mom was happy!

Thanks! I knew about our state...Illinois having the site, but never gave it second thought till now and darn glad I did...I've found unclaimed monies for my dad, sister, 2 aunts, exFIL so far...I'm gonna keep on looking. When I called my dad to tell him, I asked first if I get a finders fee and he said yes...lol Hey, ya never know...might get a whole dollar for myself..lol Now to print off the forms and get the money claimed for the folks.

I found some for my Dad a couple years ago on the Minnesota site, nothing for myself. I found some for DH's old company too.

A couple of years ago my state (PA) had a terminal set up at a county fair and on a whim I checked. I had $300 (or there abouts) in unclaimed money! Nothing for me now though.

Nothing for me, darn!! I did find out that there are people out there in other states with the same name as me though! I never would've imagined someone having the name "Summer" and the same last name as me. Too weird!

I found my sister in law, uncle in law and my sister!

DH and I were on there several years ago and got almost $1000 from an old insurance claim.

Cool, thanks for the link. I found money that is owed to me, apparently unpaid wages from a job I had back in 1993. All that I can tell from the search is that it is under $100. LOL, it's probably less than the stamp I will use to claim it, but fun nonetheless.

Yep us too DH had an old bank acct he forgot about for years!!! ... about 150, not bad!

I also got my Mom over 1000.00 one year. I just plug in everyones name I know and if I find a maybe.. I tell them to go check it.
