Check in Upgrade

We don't really know what the reason was that the guests extended their stay. We've read plenty of threads where guests become ill, injured, or someone even passes away and the resorts extend their stay for the emergency they are undergoing. I don't think self-extending is truly even an option if a resort is sold-out. I guess if people refuse to leave the room, but we've tried to extend our stay at OKW in the past and they just didn't have anything available so we had to move to a a different hotel.

Note to self, don't take an offered upgrade at BWV! This sounds like the car rental company philosophy!

We actually didn't have a choice they said no standard view rooms were available.......if it ever happens to you just make sure to check your points online

We have heard of plenty of cases here where folks have self extended. They do so by not leaving the room by check out time. We actually got caught in one of those on our very first stay as members. We were assigned a 1 bedroom at OKW in building 15. When we unlocked the door, I noticed a kitchen towel on the little shelf by the door. When I went farther into the unit I found suitcases open on the bed and another towel. The room had been cleaned, but the previous occupant had not vacated completely, or returned. When we went back down to HH, the cast member said "They said they would be out". This was at 3:30 PM, so obviously they had packed, but then returned to get something out of the suitcase. The front desk moved us to another Miller's Road villa, and all was fine, but they were trying to decide if they should charge his credit card.

I'm pretty sure the reason they extended was to stay for Christmas. At least that is what the manager told us. He looked like he had not been having a good week. He told me he had almost no rooms in the resort.

But how inconsiderate of others that was! Timeshares operate on as close to completely booked as they can at all times, so when someone "self extends", it in conveniences more than just the front desk cast members.

Last March we stayed at BWV and I booked a pool/garden view 1 BR. The room we were first assigned had NO view. The view was completely obscured by tree limbs. The limbs were also growing over onto the balcony. I called the front desk and requested a room change with a view. We were given a great 1 BR on the corner of the Boardwalk and Village Green. I consider it an upgrade to Boardwalk view but it was probably still pool/garden view catergory. Anyways, it was a wonderful view and a great stay. It's going to be hard staying standard view next month.

That room is actually a boardwalk view, I had it one time.

I guess I should have said, that self-extending done properly and legitmately is not always an option!

If a guest refuses to leave the room, then I guess the resort needs to decide what to do.....call security, remove the belongings, charge full rack rate for the room....:confused3

I was trying to recall the hold over options a guest and the resort has. I know I've seen the rules but don't recall the specifics. As a min, they can charge them for the room either cash or points.

Well, that's a given, but it seems to me where a timeshare is involved, it should be something more of a penalty than that. It certainly effects other people negatively.

I know in some states a guest, once in residence, can stay on but may have to pay full price. I know I've heard it both ways for FL but simply don't recall the final information, I'm sure someone else here know though. I would agree with you on the reasonableness regardless of the legalities.

We have been members since 1997 and have taken nearly 50 DVC trips. Not once have I expected or received an upgrade.

Interesting! I would think that once your stay expires, you are trespassing and legal actions could be taken. But then again, I know nothing about the laws regarding hotels/timeshares occupancy.

We received an upgrade at OKW on June 30th. We had originally booked a studio and got bumped to a one bedroom.

I am one of the ones PP mention who has gotten multiple upgrades. Details in the thread above.

I personally do not consider it an upgrade if the move was due to problems.

To me an upgrade is you check in, you have a studio booked and for no reason you get a one bedroom.

Not going to happen with DVC. Some type of problem will always precede a move to another level of room even if they don't tell you about it.

We were upgraded from a 1BR SV at BWV, to a 1BR BWV. I think because no one wanted the room ALL the way down at the end of the hall. For us, it was perfect.
