I want a tablet that will have wifi and allow me to skype and surf the web. I don't need any serious bells and whistles so no Apple products - I want something very inexpensive. Do you guys have any idea how much something like that would cost and any recommendations?

I have the Samsung Galaxy Tablet.. it does everything I need/want it to and was very inexpensive compared to the iPad.

Both of these are really fairly top of the line...I need something a lot cheaper. Now maybe such a thing doesn't exist, but I thought someone on this board would know.

I know of a brand that I was NOT happy with, it's the Pandigital. I bought a refurb one for my grandson and had problems with it, tried to get it replaced by Pandigital, only to find out that they are now out of business and no longer supporting them or honoring their 90 day refurb warranty. So, I'd stay away from those.. even though they are very inexpensive now.. that's why. I was able to get a refund for it from who I bought it from, but I just wanted this inexpensive tablet to work.

I have a Toshiba 10 inch Thrive and it's wondefull. Look at those, they are reasonable now.. around 200.00.

I'll be watching this thread.

Have you considered a refurb or an older model/used of a higher line model? The original iPads you can get refurbed for around $100 I think. But I don't think you can Skype with those.

Verizon has the Galaxy tablet for $99 today.

I didn't read the fine print, but you may want to check it out.

If you're trying to skype, you will probably be sorely disappointed in the speed of the tablet. The Nexus 7 is goin for $200 this weekend and you might snag a deal on monday.

The galaxy tab 2 has a dual core processor while the nexus has a quad core, which is well worth the $20 extra for it. A lot of cheap tablets wont have dual cameras. You might find what you want in a cell phone, if you can get an upgrade.

Im of the mindset you get what you pay for. IMO, to get something halfway decent, you're looking at about $200.

I agree. A tablet is something that if you go cheap on you are going to get something that isn't made well, doesn't perform well and you will end up replacing it fairly quickly.

I just ordered from best buy the Samsung Galaxy tab 2 7 inch $179 with a $20 gift card. It has 8g but expanded to 32g with a SD card. We want to surf the net at home, watch a movie once in a while, play some apps. Fits my budget.

I ordered 3- Kindle fire HD's from Amazon today @ $199 each. If you apply and get their credit card it will give you a $50 card that you can use right away. With the new Kindle you get a free month of prime membership where you can download books and movies.
They are offering $20 off of their prime membership of $79 for a year.

I did a LOT Of research on this last summer.

For me it came down to 2 models: the Nexus and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, both 7 inch models. They consistently came out ahead in every review I read.

I ended up getting my 3 kids each a Galaxy for Christmas. At the time I ordered, the Student Edition was available, so they got a keyboard.

I chose it over the Nexus for both that package and for the expandable memory. The Nexus apparently has a better camera if that's important to you.

Walmart seems to have a bunch of inexpensive ones; I got my 9 y/o DD one for $99 for Christmas. It's the HKC 7" 8GB; reviews were pretty good, it uses Google Play and it's good enough for what she needs (games, apps, music)
