Hi there
I'm going to Orlando in June. I'm flying from Ireland and I'll have an unlocked phone.

All I'm looking for when I arrive is a cheap pay as you go sim card. Something that I can top up with credit, just like at home. I'll only be using it for text messages back and forth to the others in our party.

Hope someone can help me!

Would you recommend this for just texting over there? Yknow if I needed to text someone in my party?

it was fine for texting. i had a net10 phone a few times, but preferred my own phone so bought this, when you top up it lasts i think 90days the credit then you need to topup again, you could sell it on with the balance on it after you return so someone else could get the use of it, and get some money backon it.

Is it an American number that you get with it and is the $9.99 you pay for the card including credit for texts?

(Thanks for info so far, BTW!) :)

Are you planning on sending a lot of texts? when we are there with friends or family we always arrange times and places to meet, only reason we need to text if plans change or we are going to be late. Would never be worth buying something like this, only costs me 35p/text in US.

I'm on O2 Ireland and their roaming charges are pretty ridiculous lol.
I do plan on sending texts back and forth to my parents when myself and my boyfriend are off during the day or in the evening or something. It'll be easier in terms of arranging times because there's always the chance of delay.

This is a customer review does not sound too good;

This used to be a great product for when I had friends visiting from the UK - they could bring their cellphone with them, buy a SIM and pop into an unlocked phone - it gave you 50 free mins, so you had a local number while you were here and no roaming charges - it was perfect for a Visitor in that respect.
However Locus Telecom - who are behind this product have unilaterally decided that you no longer get 50 mins free.
I had the same experience as others, no mins added, as others have said. Customer Service is pathetic - I called in and was initially, promised they would be added, then hung up on, then call back to be told the promotion has expired.
Its a Rip off get a PrePaid Tmobile Sim instead, cheaper and better rates.
What's great about it: Its a pretty yellow color Sim card. What's not so great: $10 thats all you get, no mins - no nothing else No, I would not recommend this to a friend

No more expensive than ours, you have to send quite a few texts to get to $10 to buy a card then the texts ontop.

O2 Ireland costs for US roaming
Pay Monthly Text message €0.30 per message
Speak Easy (Prepay) Text message €0.39 per message
Business Text message €0.30 per message

So what your suggesting is that I just get a sim card here and top it up and just use it over there instead of getting a local number?

(I am a bill pay customer and I already pay enough every month, to not have to have extra costs of text messages)

He's saying that you're not going to find anything much better than just using your O2 contract which you already have and paying the bill when you get home.

The US-Sim card is $10 and for that you get NOTHING, i.e. you'd have to top it up and pay for texts on top. For that same $10, you could NOT buy the USA-Sim and use the money you've saved to send around 25 text messages on your O2 contract for the same cost. If you're going for two weeks, that's just under 2 text messages a day which would be plenty for most travellers, even with a split party (after all, you'd only need to text in the event of a major delay which is unlikely).

Depending on how long you're out there for and how much texting you intend to do, it's rarely worth bothering - most people just arrange a time and place to meet and stick to it, plus a couple of texts home during the whole trip. You can always take an iPad or laptop or something and use free wifi to send messages back home if you need constant contact. You can also buy phone cards out there which give you lots of minutes to call back to the UK from any public phone cheaply.

I sent one text message the last time we went, it cost me 25p.

I have a irish o2 phone its bill pay I signed up for o2 travel and its cost me 24 cents a text message in November /december last year and nothing to receive a message. I know making and getting calls cost a fortune though :) Just check out the sim you get cause any usa sim I have got in the past have charged to receive a message as well as send one but don't know if they all do it.

think i might be better off just buying a pay as you go sim card before i go

Sorry can't understand why you are buying a PAYG sim.
You have to buy the sim which will be extra cost then pay more per text than you will pay on contract. O2 PAYG cost 39 cents per text, using your own O2 contract would cost 30 cents per text.

Ah sure, I'm only trying to weight up options right now. Not going til June, I'll probably cave in and go with your suggestion of just using my contract! :)
