Please don't think I'm crazy!! LOL!!!!

So my kids love mac n' cheese...the kind from the box with powder, etc. I'm always getting great deals on pasta (usually free after coupons) at the grocery store, so I had a thought that I would stock up on elbow macaroni noodles and use them to make my own mac n' cheese.

They don't like the homemade kind (the good kind!! LOL!!), but like the powder. I was thinking I could just buy the cheese powder in bulk, and do it myself.

Has anyone done this? Do you find you can get the cheese powder cheap enough that you actually save $$$ this way?

Yes, this is my nutty budget idea for the day!!!

Can't say I'd endorse it (scary stuff), but here are a couple of links from Googling:

Amazon has cheese powder: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias=grocery&field-keywords=cheese+powder

Smart and Final, Costco and Sams Club night carry the cheese powder.

However, not sure how much you'd save if you shop around and buy it on sale. I think the last Kraft Macaroni and Cheese sale at our store was 4 for $1 for the 5.5. ounce box. That works out to less per ounce than what the bag of plain elbow macaroni sells for by itself.

I have seen the powder for sale at Amish markets and its not very expensive, but I haven't seen it in any other retail type store around here, but your area may be different.

I bought some of the bulk powder at Real Canadian Superstore.

I did not care for it. It looks cheesy (lots of orange color) but not much cheese flavor. Maybe other brands might be better.

I love the President's Choice White Cheddar Macaroni. I just don't make it like I do the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. I make the sauce into a rue, then add the noodles.
