My dd28, very busy mom of 2 toddlers went to get a massage this week. She goes a few times a yr and it is a real treat for her. She has had very chatty therapists the last couple of times she has gone. DD is a very friendly person and I am sure she gives off the positive/friendly vibes that contributes to this. She told me that she doesnt want to be rude but that she would prefer to have a massage with very limited talking. This is her time to relax and get away from it all, not to mention the difficulty in talking with your face in the donut pillow attached to the table. Anyone else have this happen? And if so, how do you handle the chatty massage therapist?

It's acceptable to say *before* the session starts that you prefer a silent massage. Or else if she doesn't want to say anything directly, to make this preference known when booking.

I totally agree with her that chatting up a stranger can distract from the experience. HTH

One or two word answers usually do it. Yes's and no's. Eventually they stop trying to get more info out of you and stop asking questions, lol.

Thinking about it some more... well, I don't know really. Mine always ask the purpose of my visit and I make it clear that it's for relaxtion. So they might talk to me in the beginning as they're loosening me up but they usually stop.

Another thought: Does your DD go to a spa type place or is more like a sports massage/chiropractic office? They can have very different atmopheres and approaches.

Not even words... just "Mm huh" and "uh uh" and "MmmMmm?" should do the trick... :)

I had the opposite problem last week when I had a massage. I was feeling chatty but the massage therapist wasn't talking. I won't go back to her. I need someone a bit more friendly to help loosen me up. I don't want to have a marathon conversation, but I do need someone who smiles and is friendly.

I agree that the one word answers should be sufficient in getting the therapist to shut up. It certainly worked on me when the therapist did it to me. I shut up, real quick. :rotfl:

Well, speaking as a massage therapist, I personally try to take my que from the client. Some don't want to talk and some like to chat, it's their form of relaxation. Sounds like her last therapist wasn't paying attention.

The best thing she can do is tell the therapist upfront. She's paying for the time and she should get what she needs out of it. If she doesn't want to seem rude, have her just tell the therapist she needs a little "down time and wants to zone out" That ususally gets it across.

At some point I am afraid I just would have stopped answering her. I like it quiet when I get a massage, I like to be in my own world without anyone else yakking in it...
