chasing kid with hamburger

Nice-call kids at your daycare brats. I am sure the parents feel they have to make up for the time they put her in your hands.

Oh please, we all know that some kids ARE brats, being a daycare provider doesn't mean you have to believe they are all angels.

When I was a nanny and took my girls to play at McD's or BK they could eat whenever they wanted. Usually we arrived and ordered food, they would immediately eat a little bit then go off to play. I would sit at the table while watching them or studying.

They would pop back over every few minutes to say Hi or take a few bites. I figured they would eat what they wanted, when they wanted. No need to force food on them, especially junky food. Sometimes they ate everything and sometimes not, but it worked out fine.

On the off chance they were ever hungry at home you could substitute junky food with a healtheir snack of some fruit or veg. No problem with me. I think that only ever happened once.... they usually ate that McD's food since it was a rare treat for them and they were not about to let that go to waste. :rotfl:

Thankfully I don't have to deal with the little princess since she is not in my room, but I hear her being sent to the office with screaming fits almost every day. Why the screaming fits?? Because sometimes they tell her NO and that is something she never hears at home and can't cope.

Seriously...I love my babies (I work in the infant room) but there are quite a few spoiled rotten little brats in the older rooms.

That does seem odd to me. My nephew has autism and some sensory issues, and even though he didn't like to sit and eat, he sat and ate. He might have eaten a few bites, gotten up to play for a bit, then come back later (only at home, though; at a restaurant of any kind he sat and ate with the family), but he did not eat and play at the same time. He's 17 now and is growing like a weed, and would eat 24/7 if we let him!

Oh cut the dad some slack please.

The first thing that came to my mind is maybe this family is on a long road trip & the kids have been in the car for hours. Maybe they're taking a quick stop to eat & so dad is letting them stretch their legs while they eat at the same time...cause they're in a hurry to get back on the road. :car:

I know this is a remote possibility but hey it could happen. The reason I thought of it is because we RARELY eat fast food...about the only time we stop at a McDonald's is when WE ARE on a road trip.

I work with preschoolers and I don't think chasing kids around with food is ever a good idea. They need to learn to sit down, eat their meal and then go off and play. And we've had many parents who are afraid their kids aren't eating enough and have ask us to spoon feed them. We don't have any kids under 3 and every single one of them is capable of using a spoon. If they've never been made to use one, it's time to learn!

One of my students lives at the end of my street so I often see her outside waiting for the bus with her dad or grandma. She is usually running around the driveway and they are literally chasing her with a bowl and a spoon trying to get her to eat! The dad once said they don't have time to eat at the table because it takes her 90 minutes to finish a meal. We asked if she sits and eats and he said, "No, she eats a little, plays a little and then comes back." Our teacher advised him to put the food on the table for no more than 30 minutes and then take it away. She'll learn to eat it while it's there if he's hungry enough. The dad admitted that they usually feed her every meal because they're afraid she doesn't eat enough. Then he commented that she's starting to get a big tummy and big thighs! When you follow your kid and make them take bites of food, they will probably get too much. He can't believe that she sits at the table at snack time and eats without getting up to play. We said we simply don't allow it. You leave the table, you're done. He just scratched his head...

I agree ... but ... my DS is 2.5 but looks like he is 4 years old. Sure he eats when he is hungry but he is at the stage where he would rather play then eat and doesn't understand when he gets so hungry he is cranky. There are times when we need to "force" him to eat ... Sometimes that means making his egg/cheese omelet and letting him eat it in the living room while we feed it too him. He might play with a toy then come over for a bite and go back to the toy. The alternative is a kid that gets super hunger and doesn't know how to cope. Will we do this when he is 4? NO ... but is it bad that we do it now ... I don't think so ... he's still a baby in some ways and needs to be babied.

ETA: I just wanted to add that this happens, MAYBE, a few times a month and it's usually only breakfast. For some reason he really fights eating breakfast and lately we have let it go. We offer it and if he doesn't want it, we wait until snack time. He sits and eats his lunch and dinner at the table just fine. He says when he is done, brings his plate to the kitchen and goes to the bathroom to wash his hands!!

I just wanted to let you know that not all kids can eat early in the morning I have two kids that have never eaten breakfast they just can't...their tummy will hurt and sometimes they have gotten sick but they will drink a glass of milk and they are fine...I mean they really have gotten bad sick from it like I have to stop to let them out

they started to say they don;t want to eat and I just backed off and they are fine ..they will eat lunch...I don;t really know why they are like that but they are..I know myself I don't like to eat cereal or donuts it makes me sick too so i know how they feel...

I'm not saying what you are doing is wrong just thought I'd give a different pint of view on the breakfast thing... plus you aren't following him with his food and putting it in his mouth when he opens it...:hippie:

I see some what of what you are saying but if they are in that much of a hurry why stop and mcdonalds with a play place or why not go through the drive through??:confused3

My mother would not have done this.
I would have sat at a table and ate my dinner and then have been allowed to play.

But her follow me around giving me bites of a hamburger when I felt like taking bites....wouldn't happen in this lifetime and probably not in the next! ;)
