So I get an email Sunday saying that they are confirming a change of address for my Chase BP card and shortly after get another for my Chase Freedom. I immediately called and they said it was changed to an p.o. box in CA, I'm from PA. And that new cards were requested to be sent to that address. RED FLAG DUH!!. So we call and tell them that we didn't request address change or new cards to be sent to another authorized user. She assures us it is taken care of and new cards will be sent and those accounts will be closed. So today we get the new cards and they send one for the woman who tried to get them mailed to the P.O. Box. Needless to say my husband called livid. Not feeling to confident but hate to close the accounts since we have had them so long. They don't have balances we pay them off every month. How much does this affect our credit score if we cancel them. They each have 13,000 limit. Our credit score is over 830 now.

Call the fraud department and explain to them. You shouldn't have to close the account at all....they should be able to take care of it and deactivate those cards and that account number and re-issue you new cards with a new account number, and all your credit score info won't be affected because it's still the same account despite the new number. Then just watch your statements for anything suspicous and report it right away if you see anything questionable.

We had something like this happen where we had a couple of charges that were not 'ours' for small trial things on it. We called Chase and they changed our numbers/cards and sent the new ones and wiped off the charges. It was very easy and we were happy how they handled it.
Definitely call the fraud dept.

Hope it gets taken care of smoothly! :)

I agree. I've had a cc stolen from my lunch bag at work. (long story but needed to order something for work that had to be ordered by fax back before online banking or online anything) My own dumb fault for not keeping it locked 24/7.
I noticed the shopping spree when I got the statement in the mail. I had to sign an affidavit of which charges weren't my own and the account # was changed but not closed from a credit history pov.
I would inquire as to how this person got your info and see if they can track down the owner of the PO box. My bank at the time seemed to have no interest in catching the theif but I sure wanted to.

Chase caught illegal use of my card and called me at work. And sent me an e-mail and called our home. I had all those numbers and e-mails listed with my account. They cancelled my card immediately and issued me a new card that arrived a few days later. Charges not made my me were removed. I was impressed with their response.

Is there a reason why you are worried about your credit score? I understand your reason for wanting to close the accounts - they did not handle things properly. If you are done doing business with them then I would close them regardless of what they do to your score unless you are trying to secure a loan in the near future and want a better score.

So, what I understand, is that Chase did cancel your current cards and send new ones in replacement, but also sent one in the name of the woman who requested to be added to your account in California? So, they didn't take her name off of the account? I'd call back and make sure that anything about her is wiped from the account and destroy the card they sent in her name. Keep Chase for now. If something else gets screwed up, then think about changing providers.

I was told they won't go after her since she didn't make a charge yet, just requested the cards and changed account info. I just don't like how they handled it. I had to answer a hundred security questions just to get to change everything back, yet how was she able to change the address and get her name on the card? There was no way she could have known the answer to the personal security questions. It had to be a security breach at Chase or a bad customer service rep. In the fraud department they told me they don't know how could it have happened since that was a different department and didn't seem to understand my concern. I am not really worried about the credit score. Just bought a brand new car and paid cash and don't anticipate any loans in the future, but you work so hard to have a great score and I'd like to keep it there. They are our main credit cards we've had for a very long time. I have scanned my computer many times with different programs to make sure I didn't have some kind of virus, spyware, or malware and nothing shows so I don't think it's on my end.

You're not going to believe this, but even after two phone calls about this account and telling them about the fraudulent change of address and card requests. I just checked my online account and that P.O. box is still listed as the primary address for the account and mine as the secondary. WTH. I guess I am going to have to cancel them because Chase apparently doesn't care about my security.

It is most likely changed in their system. It will take up to 30 days for the change to show "online". If they have your correct info when you call to verify then it is fine. Chase has some of the best fraud protection out there. Sounds like they did do something right as they notified you right away. I think you just need to get a supervisor to explain all the changes and how they work to you.

When we called Sunday night things were changed immediately though, and the new account numbers showed immediately, so I'm not so sure about the 30 day thing. I changed it back myself just to be safe and will keep checking the accounts. They overnighted me new cards again, but those accounts are not showing yet. Just so frustrating that thieves are lurking everywhere and now I am paranoid about all my online accounts including my banks. Will definitely be getting my credit reports to make sure everything looks as it should. I guess I'll wait a few weeks for that since this just occurred Sunday.

Freeze you credit and get copies of your credit reports to make sure there are no other shenanigans going on in your name.

We had something similar happen and my biggest piece of advice is to check your credit reports ASAP, because when a credit card company reports a change of address to the credit bureaus, they make the change on your credit reports as well. So this PO box may be showing as belonging to you now according to the credit bureaus. That makes it easy for them to request copies of your actual credit report and to open any other cards in your name and have them sent to the PO box without raising red flags from other credit card companies.

Thanks, I never thought of that! I think I'll put a 90 day fraud alert on both mine and my husbands credit for now and keep checking them regularly.

Be careful cancelling your and your DH card as they may leave the account open in the other woman's name and you would have no right to check into at that point because you have closed your accounts. Do a credit freeeze and check back regularily until this is cleared up.

Feeling a little better about it now. We have to go straight through the security department now and we tested it. We had to call to get the online account access back because it was frozen and as soon as we got through we were immediately sent to security. I think we will test this out every once in awhile to make sure they are are following through. I checked my credit report and it was fine but it's only been a few days so I am going to wait a week or so then check my husbands and repeat the process with the other credit bureaus over the next few months. We have the police identity theft report and have the credit freeze for 7 years. It shouldn't be much hassle since we usually pay cash for everything and don't plan on buying a new home and just bought a new car so we shouldn't need credit. Maybe my eye will stop twitching now.

I'm glad things seem to be looking up:banana: I hope your eye stops twitching too:laughing:
