Chase Sapphire Reserve Rumored Change

I am semi-interested in the delta gold or platinum. But we got to Orlando the most right now, and from us the only direct flights are Southwest and Spirit. We only use Delta or others when we go to California or international. And Delta screwed us over realllly bad the last time we flew with them leaving us stranded in the LA airport overnight basically on the last leg of a very long trip and it has left a very bitter taste in my mouth towards them

But the gold seems pretty good with the bonus and the free first year worth of fees and we do own a DL contract now.... 🤣

Are you planning to go to DLR soon?
If not you might want the platinum/reserve as after a year you would have a companion ticket. The sign up bonuses are normally higher on the larger AF cards.

Downside of CP is it has to be booked with an AMEX (you could use AMEX platinum to get 5x on flights rather than delta Amex) and you can’t use points. You also can’t add someone to the booking although you can link the reservations. So if your party is more than 2 you could pay for the other(s) with points but unfortunately free bags is only for card member and who is on the reservation with them. If you are a party of 5 use CP for SO +1 and then card member + 2 on the other reservation to at least get 3 bags free.

Not super soon but less than a year. Have a VGC reservation for April next year. We would like to go before the 70th celebration is over next summer and we have banked points to start using Feb 2026. But a year from now when the first pass kicks in may be cutting it close

I was thinking of possibly getting the Delta Platinum for the companion voucher for when we go to DL or Aulani. Just 2 of us right now, no kids (yet?) We do have an Amex platinum that my wife signed up for last year for the huge bonus, now we are deciding if we want to keep it or downgrade to Amex Gold for the lower fee while we use up the points since there is no redemption bonus for Amex Plat (that I know of, is there one?) and we don't seem to use the card much since it really didn't seem to earn points very well for most things.

That sounds like a good plan on both.

Not sure about Platinum perks but I think downgrading that makes sense for groceries and dining at 4x.

Since you are mostly using SW this might not matter but the CP is only main cabin on platinum where with the reserve you get main cabin, comfort+ and first class which might be beneficial when getting to AUL but of course you have to fork over cash for the other ticket.

To be fair, every airline does this on a fairly regular basis to people. But I totally understand the sentiment. Happened to me on American years ago.

Looong story time. This was particularly bad for us for a number of reasons.

It was the tail end of our trip home from Fiji which was a 10-11 hour flight by itself We waited for 4 or 5 hours for our layover there and went to the gate. We had to go outside and take a shuttle to the other side of the airport due to construction. It was late afternoon at this point. There were of course others gathered waiting. The plane showed up to the gate, but there was no gate agent helping people or getting the line ready. Flight attendants showing up and standing around. A few minutes before scheduled boarding time everyone sitting by the gate gets a text message that our flight has been cancelled and alternate flights will be automatically made for us or we can visit the help desk or see a gate agent.

Because there was no gate agent, we find another delta gate and they say they cant help us there, so we had to go to main help desk. So now we had to go back outside, get back on the shuttle, go back to the other side of the airport due to the construction, wait in the long line of angry customers, and talk to the help desk. The automatic reservation that they booked us home on was of course not direct like our original flight, was a connection and left around 1 or 2 AM from LA, then went through ATL at 10 AM and got us home around noon the following day. I paid extra and had a longer layover just so we could avoid an extra connection. Now we were going to be having a connection anyway, still had the longer layover, and I got to pay more for it! And we get to get home 14 or 15 hours after we were supposed to be home.

So finally I get to the help desk and they say they can rebook us on anything else that is available. Of course it being the evening now, there is nothing else leaving anytime soon and there was nothing else available other than a double connector that got us home 1 hour earlier. I ask why the flight was cancelled, and they say that they did not have staff for the plane. I told them I had booked this flight 6 months ago, they should have staffed it or known long before boarding time that they did not have the staff. She apologized and offered a $15 meal credit that literally wouldn't buy the cheapest meal in that place. I ask about a refund on our tickets, no go. I say that we paid extra for the direct flight and now we don't have it. Nope. I ask about being delayed overnight. Since our next flight leaves so early in the morning and was now less than 8 or 12 hours out they can't get us a room anywhere or credit for that either. I'm pissed at this point so she gives me a second $15 meal credit (wow so generous, especially since there were 2 of us they cancelled on anyway why did we not get at least 2 to start with!)

So she says that she can't do anything about any refunds or credits, only the small meal credits and gives me the number to call in order to try and get compensation or literally anything to make it right. We stick with our automatically booked flights and get out of line to use our credits somewhere. I try to call the number she gave me... already closed for the day, call back tomorrow. Gee thanks. All while they have these #1 rated airline customer services posters hanging up....

We eat something, of course it's more than $30 for the two of us so we get to waste more money on crappy airport food. I get an email from delta that due to the cancelled flight they are putting 7500 points into my account. Whoopee. So we get on the 2 flights home. I call the number again, you have to submit a case online and once you have a case number they can talk to you about it. I submit a case online. I wait a month and finally get a response. Because we accepted miles and alternative flights they can give us nothing. Thanks and bye.

They could just have done soooo many things better and they failed on just about every count

Yeah...I'd be pissed about that too.

The high end credit card competition has really gotten fierce in recent years, and with Amex's upcoming changes to the Platinum Card, this feels like an arms race.

Whichever credit card company opens a lounge at MCO would get a leg up, in my book. However, the airport's layout makes it hard to install a lounge in one airside location that passengers of all airlines can conveniently access. Also, each terminal's hub-and-spoke configuration provides little real estate for new "stuff". MCO could get really innovative and build a new terminal that's specifically for lounges (with train lines between all the terminals). Before building it, MCO would obviously need commitments from Chase, Amex, Capital One, and dare I say DVC?

Sheesh… I don’t travel like many here, and when I do it’s generally free.
That said, we eat out almost every night of our lives.
The Chase Freedom Unlimited with 3% back on meals gives me $200+ a month… and Zero annual fee.

At $200 a day, that's some great eatin'.

I have thought about the AMEX Platinum or CSR, but with the "couponing" of both and maybe a "refresh" of AMEX Platinum ( code word for "pay more for less"). I'll stick with my Costco Visa, which gets 3% on dining and all travel. And zero annual fee. Granted, its a once-a-year cash check, but worth the wait.

The reduction to 1% on other travel for CSR sealed the deal. Most of our travel $$ are cruises and the reduction is a big deal.

Indeed, keeping in mind that includes alcohol and tip.
Also a smaller portion of that is the non meal 1.5%.

The card itself might not have an AF but you are required to have a Costco membership in order to cash the check…

Costco card is also nice for gas if you don’t have a Sam’s card that gets 5% but same “AF”

Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited, Savor cards are $0 AF cards that grant 3% on dining.

I’m really bad about optimizing my rewards. I was happy to get 1.5 cents per point when it is very low fuss. Now it’s 1.25 and I still do it because I’m too lazy to hunt for deals. I do get enough to cover the fee plus a bit more.
But if they make earning points less lucrative, that kind of ruins the whole thing.

I do like the lounge at PHL though. That alone might make Chase worth it still. I’ve been to BOS too, but I usually fly delta so can’t get to the BOS lounge most of the time.
...(sits on the sideline wondering if we are the only ones that have never once been in an airport lounge... not that there is one in BHM anyway...)

We are close to you. I have been to a lounge 2 times and "Minute Suites" 2 times since getting the CSR in 2016.

Lounges never seem to be convenient for us and we like to fly direct as much as possible and if not direct a short layover.

Since getting the Reserve we've almost always made usage of lounges included in Priority Pass or other ones we've been able to get into with the Reserve card.

Internationally they've been very important when we've been able to use them (Paris was unable to use it due to terminal restrictions) although not all are amazing (Cancun was sucky).

Domestically we've used them before our flight. Mostly they help reduce the chaotic nature of the airport terminals. Some lounges can get quite busy but most often are still less than the terminals.

However, if your gate or terminal is really far, like very far, from the lounge you'll get access to it won't make as much sense and we've run into that a time or two.

Not me. I arrive at the last possible second to not miss my flight. I book non stop whenever possible. I don’t fly international (yet)

As somebody who has been a frequent flyer for over 10 years, the lounge landscape has changed ever since Amex started operating their own lounges.

Previously, it was sleepy old Admiral's Clubs which weren't very crowded and had horrible food and drink offerings. As bad as it sounds, they felt peaceful and exclusive.

Now, lounges are packed to the gills with people but the food/drink offerings are MUCH better. If you don't mind the fact it can feel like a refugee camp, lounges are on par with a higher-end airport restaurant in quality.

The value depends on whether you're a frequent flyer or not. If you only fly once or twice a year, visiting an airport restaurant will be cheaper. If you fly often, lounges become an all you can eat (and drink) buffet for a ~$500/yr flat rate. It's almost a Gym/Costco business model where they make money selling memberships, regardless of if you actually use it or not.

It drastically depends on what time of day you are flying and where you are at in terms of airport on this. We've been to many more lounges that are not packed to the gills as you say.

Heathrow is a disaster but ALL the lounges are quite busy it is after all an extremely busy airport (their rule was 2 hours before your flight when most are 3 hours before your flight you can get access). Copenhagen on the other hand very sparsely populated. Athens (in Greece) was very nice and had no one there (we had access to two lounges both located across from each other) but it was very early in the morning; Athens was one of the nicest I've been to though the food wasn't super amazing the ambience was elegant. Cancun was absolutely packed and food crappy. Vegas has been 50/50. LaGuardia was decently packed the last time we were there, JFK not bad. San Jose, CA not really. Narita, Japan quite busy BUT the lack of bathrooms (odd in terms of lounges) inside turned more than a few away however they had really good Japanese food full meals custom made, that was the only lounge I've seen that had a dedicated long table for people with families to sit at. And the list goes on.

But I do think many people conjure up Delta or American Airlines lounges in terms of crowdedness most especially because of the restrictions they've been doing to curb access. That has not been our reality though with Priority Pass lounges or Chase Sapphire lounges we've been to overall. They can get quite busy but it's not de facto that.

That's not an issue for us. The Executive Membership which gives another 2% on Costco purchases, including Costco travel, rebates us almost enough to cover the membership. With the 5% on gas, 3% on travel, 3% on dining, and the fact that we are about a mile from Costco it works for us, YMMV.

I keep trying but I cant seem to justify the $695+ annual fee. I did get an AMEX Platinum welcome bonus offer of 175,000 miles and that may tip the scales but I don't like the coupons. If it feels like work, I'm not interested.
