We are going to WDW for the 1st time since 2002, 2 adults, 10 nights beginning Dec. at AKL. We are contemplating the DDP, but my husband has a Chase Disney Card that we forgot about (he's had it for 8yrs) - looks like we can get 10% off some dining places there. Just wondering if "on our own paying" using the Disney Visa when accepted will be better for us than a DDP?

Sounds like a great trip - love AKL! It probably depends on where you choose to eat. I would look at the menus of places you are interested in to see prices of what you might eat, and which are included in the 10%, and if any are signature restaurants, which will cost 2 credits. You can estimate your OOP cost for meals, and compare what the DDP would cost(also figuring you get your CS and 2 snacks). For many people, the dining plan is good because they can order what they want off the menu w/o thinking about the price, even if it might cost them less OOP, since they would like to not have to worry about the prices on vacation. For many not traveling w/ kids and families, they feel it is not the best value, and prefer to budget and buy discounted GC at places like Sam's and BJ's and save a little that way as well. There is a dining calculator some people on here use to try and see which is better for them (you could search on here for a link).

BTW you could start using the Disney Visa again now, and earn rewards to redeem for your trip to put towards your trip - we always wait to redeem at Guest Services when we arrive, to have as many points as possible, including paying off the trip. We have been lucky enough to get free dining several times, so have used points for tips, extra OOP meals, souvineers, etc. I just found out about the 10% off meals, so if we go back w/o dining plan I will be looking into it. Maybe Free Dining will become available for your dates, or a room discount that can put extra money towards DDP or meal budget!

It depends on what meals you want to book and what you want to order. The DDP doesn't work out to be a discount for many people. For me and my daughter, we come out ahead not purchasing the dining plan and just paying out of pocket, even if we aren't dining at restaurants that offer the Disney Visa discount. I'd recommend you pick out which restaurants you want to book and check online menus for the cost of what you would likely order. If you pick any restaurants which offer the discount, apply that when calculating costs. Then compare that cost to the DDP.

There are too many variables for anyone to tell you whether it's better to go DDP or OOP. The 10% Disney Visa discount is just another.

That said, my wife and I gave up on DDP (and DxDDP) a few years ago when we realized that not having everything included in the plan means no savings. So, if you skip an appetizer, or don't have those snacks, you're paying more than if you went OOP. Factor in the Disney Visa discount, and we found some real savings.

If you are planning on getting that discount, be aware that you need to use the card at the restaurant. You cannot use your magic band to pay, even if the funding for that magic band is your Disney Visa.

I have been debating this also. I have a DV.
Most of the restaurants on the list to get 10% off are only for Lunch time and I wish they had more choices at Epcot or more at the Parks.
I have since thought about buying discounted Disney Gift cards from Sam's Club and using this.
If you have a "Discover It" Credit card there is a discount of an additional 5% at Wholesale clubs that I think goes through end of June, this would be 10% off and can use anytime.
I did this last trip with my "Chase Freedom" CC but this year they do not have the Wholesale club discount on the Calendar.

In my experience, you need to have the card with you, but you don't have to use it to pay. I've had this experience with both the restaurant discount and the 10% off a $50 or more purchase at Disney stores. We were given the discount as long as we showed we had the card, but were able to pay with a gift card or our magic bands.

Wow! was this for a resent trip? I had wondered if they would give you the discount by just showing your DV card. I've heard conflicting stories.

We got the discount at Cape May Cafe last August just showing our Visa card and paying with a gift card. The merchandise discount would have been most recently on our prior trip in May 2014. We paid with our magic band and only showed the card then.

You can use the Disney Visa for a 10% discount at the Cape May breakfast? Geez, we've eaten there 3 times and I never knew that! Is it new? Will try with our card next time. THANK YOU!

Where can I find a list of the restaurants with a DV discount?

NVM - I found it in the thread Chase VDisney Visa discounts

thanks!

Check out your CC rewards and see if any give a discount as well. If you get the DDP, you can pay for your trip w/ DDP with Disney Giftcards purchased at BJs.com $100 GF for $94.99, so there you are saving 5% not only on the DDP, but on the whole trip.

Then, if you use a CC, example Discover, you can get an additional 5% by using the Discover cards to pay for the Disney gift cards purchased at BJs.com. A total of 10% savings.

The Disney CC only gives a 10% off the OOP meals.

I saw the same thing on the restaurant discount. However, the merchandise discount was an issue everywhere. My wife wanted the 10% discount but wanted to pay with Disney gift cards. We were told no on Main Street in MK, Contemporary Fantasia gift shop, two shops in the Grand Floridian, and the large clothing store in AK. Interestingly, we were able to use the DVC discount in combination with the gift cards.

I've been told that I must use my Disney Visa to get the discount. Also, the list of restaurants in which you can use it is pretty limited. On my last trip I think I only ate at one restaurant where I was able to get 10% off, and it saved me a whopping $3.

Personally, I'm a fan of the DDP because then I don't have a heart attack every time I look at menu prices, particularly at TS restaurants. But I know it's not for everyone.

Can someone post the link to the restaurants that offer the 10% discount? I've got a Disney VISA and wonder if I might be better off using that for restaurants instead of getting DDP, especially if Disney offers a room discount when we plan on going (November) instead of free dining.

On edit, I found the list of discounts and it isn't inspiring. Any place popular isn't included, any place Disney wants to drum up more business is.

Any chance you are going back within 1 year? If so, it might be worth looking into getting an AP as there are also dining discounts for APs. Since you're already at the 10 day ticket max, it seems possibly reasonable?
