Charity solicitations at intersections

Especially if they are good lookin firefighters in their uniforms....

Yum!

Yeah....if they go shirtless, I'll be happy to give them a little more :rotfl:

Pretty soon you'll get to the intersections and here the boom chicka wa wa music as you pull up. ;)

So we as a society should pay to have everyone's kids get a chance to play sports (basketball, football, baseball, soccer, swimming, whatever they want to play), go to dance class, play in the band, go to summer camp, drama classes, chess club, whatever? And when some of those kids are good enough to go further, we are expected to pay for that also?

Yes. We should. As one of the wealthiest societies in the world, it's shameful to think otherwise.

I'm going to have to give our VFD a call!

Unless I know the group I dont give. Groups that collect once a year around here that I will give to are Veterans group at memorial day, Kiwanas, Salvation Army. All of these seem to handle the situation well. I even make sure I look for the veterans on Memorial day weekend.

When I bought my first car I was so excited because the next week was the VFW poppy campaign! I felt like I'd made it and was all grown up since I could give them my own hard earned money and have the poppy on my rear view mirror.

I live in a small town. Fireman's boot, VFW, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, and the Moose for something I forget are the only ones who do anything in the intersections. Since those intersections are in 25 mph zones it isn't dangerous. It happens with the passing of the seasons, it seems. I don't mind giving, and actually look forward to it. Sometimes a warm tootsie roll is darn yummy!

You aren't compelled to buy the raffle ticket any more than you are compelled to purchase Girl Scout Cookies or any other charitable item. But the bottom line is that what the groups are doing is legal. And, just as they have the freedom to ask you for a donation, you have the freedom to say no. Seems silly to "resent" sports teams for asking for money. They're only asking, and it's still your decision.

:confused3 :earsboy:

In our county, it is not legal for anyone to be in a median or intersection to sell or ask for donations. This was passed a few years ago because we had a bunch of, men selling roses at every intersection along our highway, and various sporting and church organizations asking for donations at these intersections as well. Really what they decided was, that each organization/business is allowed 1 day every year to do this, but from my understanding, it's a lot of red tape and peperwork to go through to get permission to do this...unfortunaely the men with roses are the only ones that are still out there, but many of them have been fined for doing this w/o the proper approval.

I totally agree. I don't get the whole elitist attitude going on here. Should kids who aren't well off just be expected to do nothing? We have dance studios here who give steep discounts to students who can't afford lessons, and there are many ways they can fund raise for their costumes and anything else that comes up. I love that.

I remember being in the high school band, and there was this one family who had several kids in the band, but they were extremely poor. The kids couldn't afford band camp or some of the competitions we had to attend, but a couple of them were so talented. One summer, I helped them out at a fundraiser -- we spent several days selling BBQ sandwiches and baked goods to raise money for them to go to band camp. My parents were ticked that we were working so hard for these kids, yet they had to pay out of their own pocket. I'm proud of myself for being better than that.

::yes:: I think kids sports teams ARE charities.

The youth orchestra I'm invloved with have several families whose can't afford to pay the fees themselves and we raise money, etc. for them. One family has 8 (eight) kids in the program - on one income. They (and we) take the entire year to do it - but they eventually raise and pay every penny.
