Charging to your room

does anyone know if when you give a cc # at check in to charge to your room do they place a hold on it? I want to give a cc# but want to pay cash when i check out.....is this possible??? And I DONT want a hold placed on my card.

Also what other methods of payment do they take upon checkout to pay off your charges???
