Hi all, first time DCL. We are embarking on Friday, Feb 28 after spending We'd and Thurs at WDW. We have a card we keep on file for WDW charges, but we pay that down with Disney Visa rewards card and/or gift cards on site when we return from the park each night. When we transition from WDW to DCL, though, I understand that we can out gift cards or the rewards card on our account unlike at WDW. However, we won't know which one(s) will have how much of a remaining balance until we are done with breakfast at Topolino's before going to PC. Can we give someone at DCL all remaining cards to use prior to using the visa on file? Do I have to do that myself by editing online check in or can we do that in person, either upon checking in at port or periodically throughout the cruise (3 night Dream).

Thanks!

You can give them the gift cards at Guest Services in the main lobby, whenever you like. You can do each day or all on the first day.

Thank you! Since the Disney Visa rewards card is reloadable, do I just give them the information and physically keep the card, then?

You can bring the card to Guest Services, have the cast member scan it and apply the amount to your account, and then take the card back so you can reload it. If you’re not sure how much you will charge to your account, you can tell the CM how much of the amount on the card to use and come back later to apply more.

Thanks. After the WDW portion, it would most likely be the remaining balance of the cards and then have any final room charges going into the CC.

Thanks again!

Guest Services won't actually keep any card you give them, they'll scan it and return the physical card to you -- whether Rewards Redemption Card, gift cards, credit card. There is a priority order of which gets used first if you have multiple payment methods on your account, but I don't know if the gift cards or rewards will go first. If you have a specific preference, you might take that payment down first, and then follow a day or two later with the other.

Enjoy your cruise!

The gift cards just show up as onboard credit on your account in the full amount available on the gift card. They don't "charge as you go" with expenses. So if you had $100 on a gift card, load it to your account, your credit card wouldn't be charged until you spend $101 dollars.

Though - just to clarify on this, they don't charge as soon as you hit an amount over what you've prepaid. There's a threshold over which they'll charge (I believe it's $500, but I also have $300 in my head somehow? I didn't encounter it personally, so can't verify, but perhaps somebody else can), but otherwise they'll use the credit on your account, and then charge the balance to your CC when it's done.

i.e. we had OBC through the company we booked the cruise, we pre-paid money to our onboard account, and we also had a few gift cards that we brought down to guest services over the course of the cruise, for a grand total of $x. Our total onboard charges ended up being something like $60 over $x that was already on there, but since we didn't hit that threshold to charge, it wasn't charged until we disembarked.

When you apply gift cards or reward dollars to your onboard account think of it as a declining balance. Lets say you add $100 to your onboard account. You purchase a few drinks, buy some things in the gift shops that adds up to $200. They would use the $100 you have added to your account first then charge your account $100. Once your charges reach about $500 (on a 7 day cruise) DCL will charge your credit account on file. You can really earmark your onboard credit to a specific item.

Also, you can use Disney Gift Cards directly at point of purchase in the onboard shops (not the spa or loungers) but just in the shops.
