Charging to Room - hold on credit card?

I'll be using my Visa check card to put down for room charging. I know some have advised against this, but we are not credit card people. That's all we have.
We'll be at Portofino Bay. I've done it at WDW many times and they do not put a hold on the card. I think Universal does. How much of a hold should I expect?? Just want to be prepared!!

I think you decide the amount.
On my trip, I asked that charges be allowed on our room key, and they asked how much, and I said $100.

I know when staying at a WDW moderate, I put down the Visa check card - there was no hold and we had a $1,000 limit for charging. At the end of our stay, the charges went through. I only had $191 charged to the room.

Sounds like at Universal, it may just be easier to charge things directly to the check card rather than put the card down for room charges.
