Charging on room key question

Can anyone tell me how charging to your room on your room key works at the resorts? Do you have to leave a credit card at check in? I don't usually use credit cards but would like the idea of being able to charge to the room so I don't have to carry so much $$$ to the parks and just pay up at the end of our stay. We are staying at WL. Any info would be appreciated. :flower:

Your "key to the kingdom" is connected to a charge card of your choice, usually the one you booked your room with. But they will ask to confirm that upon checkin.

You can choose which members of your family get charging priveleges and which ones don't. You can also put a limit on how much you can charge. I believe the default limit is $1000 per day per room unless you request otherwise.

So, for example, if you booked your room with an American Express card, that same card is connected to your room key and anything you charge on that card throughout the hotel and parks is charged to that same American Express card.

I always carry at least $20 in cash just to be safe. And don't let the convenience of the card get to you - things like pins REALLY add up when you're not paying with green. On my last trip I spent well over $100 on Disney pins without really realizing it until I looked at the bill. Sometimes things just don't register - 10 small $10 purchases over the course of 2 days add up to be more than you may have wanted to spend.

You give them a credit card at check in and at the end of your stay any charges toward your room are charge to your credit card. You can however go to the front desks and pay your room charges at the end of you stay so your card is not billed (we did that a few years ago at CR so when we got home we did not have a big bill waiting in the mail box). Just ask about paying before you leave at the front desk when you check in and I'm sure they can tell you how to handle it.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to remember that on checkin because it will be on a different card. :flower:

Thanks VMM. That was just the info I was looking for. I really did not want it to be charged to my credit card. Is it possible to pay it off on a daily basis?

I have seen it posted that you can give the front desk cash or traveler's checks and leave it as a credit on your account, and your room key charges are deducted from that.

ExPirateShopGirl,

That would also be great. My whole plan is not to have to carry so much cash into the parks. I also think instead of having to dig out my wallet everytime, it would be so much easier to just give them my room key.

Ditto what ExPirateShopGirl said, and they will refund any balance left over to you at the end of your stay. This is my plan for our next trip because I just loved using our Disney Rewards card on our last trip (instead of carrying cash or racking up a large charge bill), but have switched credit cards now to receive even larger rewards for our next trip! ~:)~

I have heard that the following credit limits apply.

Value resorts: $500
Modrate resorts: $1000
Deluxe resorts: $1500

I have heard that here and on the Disney site. Good luck and have fun...

This is one of our favorite "perks". When we went to the parks we had our tickets, hotel room key, and money all in our back pocket. I left all my cash and CC in the room and didn't have to worry about losing anything.

We would save all of our receipts during the day, I would add them up at night, and the next day I would take the cash down to the front desk and pay it off so it was never charged to our CC.

You can also pay them off with ch , travelors check, ect so it doesn't ever have to be charged on your card.

When I was there in Oct. I wrote $500 worth of travelers checks @ check in towards the room key charge. The very last day when purchasing @ an AK gift shop I was told I was at my limit. They called the front desk and handed me the phone and I spoke with the cm and she informed me I was $8 over. I paid with some extra travelers checks I had. When I checked out I paid the $8. I plan on doing the same thing on our trip in a few weeks. I didn't want to use my cc because I wanted to keep a handle on how much I was spending. It worked out great.

Do they put names on the cards? How do you know which KTTK belongs to which person? I don't think we are going to put charging privilages on the kids' cards, or a very small limit if we do, do we need to write their names on the cards?

Yes you can go down and pay on a daily basis but do you really want to go wait in the reception line EVERY day of vacation. That sounds like no fun to me. Keep track of your spending and put the cash aside daily in your safe. You can pay the amount off when you check out.

Thanks everyone for all the great info. It sounds like I can do exactly what I was hoping I could do. :flower: :flower:
