Charging for Points

I wasn't sure how to even search for this so figured I'd just ask. I have a room in April at the Poly where I'm using my points. I'm staying with 3 other friends that stay because we are all running the Dark Side races that weekend. My friends need to know how much they owe me and of course I have no clue because to me it's points.

How do I go about calculating how much they'd owe me for their portion of the room?
I'd charge them the same amount as when they come and stay at your house.

I just stayed at OKW last week with a few friends. One insisted on paying for my airfare and another paid for a very nice dinner. If you aren't comfortable setting a price, something like this might work for you.

I am going to have a similar situation when we travel with my in laws. They want to pay us a portion when we rent a 2 BR. I am thinking that if it was just my family we would have a one bedroom so i will figure out the points difference between a 1 and 2 BR and then would obviously give them a deal on the points and would not charge them for full price what the rental companies are charging, so maybe $8pp. In your situation - to simplify things take the points for the room divide them by 3 (so if 150 points total then each, including you, would be responsible for 50 points) and then each of the girls could pay 1/3 of the points at say $7 or 8 pp. that would be reasonable $$ for you and a good deal for them. I wouldn't really discount who ever sleeps on the murphy bed -- it is still a bed and you have to consider that the points are for the whole resort not just a bed.

I normally just charge about 10 per point between what I would have booked and what I booked because they joined me

In a situation where you are sharing a room, I would look at total points divide by 3 and charge $10 a point. My only concern would be if they do not understand the true cost of staying at the Poly or on Property. I wouldn't want there to be any misunderstanding or confusion that they think I am profiting from them.

Just figure up what your dues are and multiply by the number of points used. Consider the buy in your share. Dues divided by your 3 friends is pretty reasonable.

Or you could just wing it and see what they'll give.

I've never charged any friends so not sure what I'd do in your case, but most people want to do something.

My rule of thumb is:
- if a friend is staying with me in an accommodation I would have booked anyway, then I don't change anything
- if I have to book a bigger accommodation or another room, then I'd charge MF + 1$ per point to offset the buy in costs (I paid $50 pp my contracts).

For me personally, if I am staying in the room and going anyway, not adding to the room size or view, I would not ask for anything.

If I am booking a larger villa to accommodate I am generally using all of my points for the use year so I will set an amount as that is taking away from another trip I would make. I base that on the number of points and annual dues.

I'm with those that say if I was going ANYWAY I wouldn't be charging anything extra to my friends to join me. I would just tell them they can buy me some drinks or meals or something... Depending on how many days you're going for maybe you could assign each person a day that they pay for you for meals etc.?! If they were going ON MY POINTS and I wasn't going then that's different and I'd figure out an amount....

Thanks everyone for chiming in! I like the $10pp idea. This is for Star Wars half marathon weekend (we are all running) so had we not stayed DVC we would have gotten a hotel room and split that up between all of us.

IMO one has to be careful charging for timeshares because many don't understand them or the costs involved. And it's best to get these issues settle up front to avoid any confusion or possible hard feelings. But a prorated charge based on the benefit and real cost/value is reasonable. anywhere from the cost of fees to $10 a point with the owner "paying" their portion as well is more than reasonable. The specifics depend on many variables including the attitudes and dynamics of the group. The best advice i can give for those looking at any similar type consideration is to realize that if there are those who have issues and always create some type of drama, one is asking for trouble no matter how you do it. I've seen posts here that family members were upset that the owner wasn't buying their meals and/or tickets even when providing a free room. Put another way, crazy or drama will be so on steroids where Disney is concerned. People are NOT on their best behavior as a rule in this type of situation though they should be.

Most people have no idea how DVC works. If the room is 20 points, I would just tell them "The room is $200, everyone kick in $50". No need to get into maintenance fees, etc.

Sure but many people have preconceived ideas about timeshares that often work against charging at all. I would keep it simple in discuccions with those who aren't well versed in DVC but behind the scenes one still has to have an idea of their costs and lost value of the points and the number of points plus a per point value is the reference.

If I were inviting someone to join me, in a room I'd book anyway, I would not ask them to pay anything. I would not turn down a round of drinks or dinner as a gesture, though.
