Charging extra to flat iron your hair

My daughter gets her hair done at Bangs. Usually it cost $20.95 for wash, cut, and style, yesterday they charged an additonal $10 to use a flat iron. Is it just me or does style mean that straightening your hair is included? She is only 12 and she has shoulder length hair :confused3

That was what I thought. I asked them if it was because it was a kids cut and they told me they charge the extra $10 for everyone.

Many of the walk in type places do charge extra for this. I was surprised the first time also. Now when my DD goes to a salon type place it is included-of course the cut is a lot higher also so I guess it evens out.

The salon I work at (not a Bangs salon) charges XXamount for wash, cut, and blowdry. Flat iron or curling iron is an extra charge as it takes more time (assuming you take your time, section by section).

interesting. It is popular in the tween/teen age range so I guess they're just capitalizing on that.

I usually go to a JCPenney salon, adult cut is $30 and I have never paid extra for the flat iron.
Heck, I actually dislike my hair flat-ironed, so I'd be majorly irked if I had to pay extra! (I just let the stylist do whatever, and apparently flat ironing was popular, so it happened a lot... I think it was a cop out because I already have very straight hair!)

Of course I was also surprised to see the $6 charge to cut bangs on that list too. I've always gotten it done for free when I had bangs (plus tip). Guess that's how it works at the more budget model salons?

I guess I am upset that we have been going there for over 2 years and they didn't let me know that they had changed the policy or have any signs up stating that it had changed.

My thoughts are that they shouldn't call it a style then. A style isn't just blowdrying your hair, it's actually styling it with a curling iron or flat iron.

i went some place recently and that was the case too. She told me its $10 extra to touch the flat iron, nothing for the curing iron. I think since its trendy, they are just looking to make an easy extra $$

A lot of salons around here charge an extra $5-25 to flat iron hair after blow drying it straight. Flat ironing takes quite awhile when done right and those irons are expensive too. Blow dry styles are usually always included (some of the budget chain places even charge for a blow dry style after a cut, some even charge more to wash your hair).

My salon charges an extra $10 for a flat-iron or curl. It's been that way for years and is explicitly displayed on their price list.

I am so glad I don't go some place to have my hair done.
It's straight, it's thin, it does absolutely nothing, and it's really really long. About once a year I'll go to the Main Street Barber shop and have about 5-7inches cut off. I also really hate having my hair washed by some one else, it feels like they're scraping my scalp off with thier nails.

And salons aren't the only place that take on extra fees for stupid little extra things that used to be free. In your case, I'd take away from the tip.

Take away from the tip? Why???? The hairdresser doesn't set the prices - the company does. Why penalize someone in a customarily tipped position with whose work you're happy????????????

I get the why of this - because the hairdresser is the one charging it. The company has no idea what she did to your hair unless she tells them. And if something most people would think was included is extra, they should really let you know before they do it. Apparently, "dry" is a style now :confused3

My salon charges extra for anything but a blow dry style. A friend paid $40 to get her DD's hair straightened with a flat iron, it took over an hour. The stylist is spending a lot of time doing this and I wouldn't expect it was free, should have asked if you were unsure.

Flat ironing is labor intensive.

Styling is typically a blow out and something minor (i.e. if you were getting an updo, that would not be included in a traditional "style" either).

I don't blame them for charging more.

Age is irrelevant.

I have flat ironed my dd's hair and she's only 7. It took 20 minutes and I wasn't as meticulous as a salon. I did bigger sections and let a little wave or two go. Including the wash and blow dry that I did on her....overall it took about 40 minutes and I wasn't even cutting her hair.

My hair is shoulder length and thin..but I have LOTS OF IT. It's always shocking. In any case...flat ironing isn't about an issue with length.

My salon doesn't charge extra--but I already pay through the nose anyway. They just need to know ahead of time so that they can allocate a proper amount of time. My girls go to other salons and there is no flat iron or curling irons involved in their stylings ever.

I think you are getting to upset over the semantics of what constitutes a "style" is a bit silly.

Chincing out on the tip as punishment is wrong. Noone is forcing you to get flat ironed.:confused3

The salon where I go does not charge extra for straightening wiht a flat iron (or at least my stylist does not....each sylist can set their own prices)

She blow dries my hair straight and than just does touch ups with the flat iron. It's $65 with tip whether she did that or not.

My thought is that if someone's hair is very course/curly/thick it can, and probably does, take a lot of work and patience and time to flat iron it - in this case, I can totally see charging for it. My hair, for example, is superfine and straight as a pin - but I would still be charged that same price to flat iron because that's the price that has been set, based on averages (is my guess). So for someone whose hair takes 40 minutes to flat iron it's a great deal, for someone like me whose hair would literally take 1-2 minutes, it's not worth the cost. I'd certainly still tip the cosmetologist based on how well she did, if the salon has dictated the price. If she sets her own price, then I would still tip based on how well she did, but I then might choose to go elsewhere next time. At least you've learned to ask beforehand what is included. :goodvibes

As a hairstylist I do not set the prices, the salon I work for does.

I would not 'cheat' my boss by not charging for a service I provide. They would also know I'm doing more work if I am spending more time on a client.

Take it out of the tip if you feel that is necessary but I don't force anyone to have their hair flat ironed. I wouldn't put my job at risk to save someone $10.00 especially in times like these.

Just curious, when you have a root canal done and need a cap does the dentist charge for it or 'throw it in' free? - I'm sure I will hear it for that.
